The Loae Tree Reporter, Thursday, December 22, 2005 S P O RT S P7
Sp00nters
Congratulations to the Lone
Tree boys basketball team on
aking the Top 10 in the state
ass 1-A rankings. Of course,
htrking in there also is ever
Present Iowa Mennonite. It
looks as if it might come down
to IMS and Lone Tree for the
title.
And now the time has come
.for The Great Swami to stare
to his crystal lall and tell you
Who will be winning the bowl
gaes this year. Even though
there are 28 bowl games to
Watch, enough to make us
Cross-eyed, I'm always sad
When the games are over
because that means it will be
ight months before 'real' foot-
all starts again. Anyway, here
goes.
B December 20--New Orleans
Owl. The game is being played
a] Lafayette, Louisiana and
Batches Arkansas State and
SOUthern Mississippi. The
OUthern Mississippi Golden
Eagles are the ones who sup-
lOSedly have the Iowa log0
look-alike. Must be why they
17 point favorites. Southern
sissippi 35, Arkansas State
10. (Yes, I know it's already
ten played, but it hadn t been
at the time I was writing this.)
December 21---GMAC Bowl.
Another one that has already
en played. Toledo is a three
point favorite over Texas-E1
Paso and I'll go along with the
gamblers and the Mid-America
COnference. Toledo 31, UTEP
Zl.
December 22--Las Vegas
tOwl. The California Golden
lears come out of a tougher
°nference, and with a slightly
etter record, than Brigham
Rug. The Bears are a seven
int favorite. I'll go with the
ra. Cal 27, BYU 21.
December 22--Poinsettia
B°Wl. Navy is only a 2 1/2 point
favorite over Colorado State,
httt I heard a little rumor that
Navy was going to sail the bat-
ueship Iowa from San Francis-
co to San Diego for the game
and blow the Rocky Mountain
tate boys away. Navy 34, Col-
Orado State 24.
I)ecember 23--Fort Worth
wl. This is between a couple
teams that are happy to be in
bowl game. The odds-makers
e established Kansas as a
ee point favorite over Hous-
• I don't know why unless
,t s the fact that the Jayhawks
woa three of their last four
ames to get bowl eligible.
at crowd there is should be
:ra Kansas I'll with the
SO
go
aYhawks to get a 35-17 win.
Nbecember 24---Hawaii Bowl.
eVada is a two point favorite
OVer Central Florida in this
ae, but I'm going with the
tral Florida Golden
,i ights. The game is being
aYed in Hawaii and the
FUlights will be much more
d to the tropical climate.
28, Nevada 14. . .
tbecember 26--Motor City
• Wl. Since the Big Ten got two
as in BCS games all the Big
n teams got snapped up
efore the Motor City got a
llOice. Instead of coming down
to either Minnesota or North-
western going to Detroit, the
bid went to Memphis. Memphis
is a six point favorite over
Akron here, but I'm going to
stick with the Mid-American
Conference again. Akron 31,
Memphis 27.
December 27--Champs
Sports Bowl. The odds-makers
don't have a line on this Clem-
son - Colorado battle. What a
bunch of chickens. Just
because the Colorado coaching
situation is in a state of flux
they can't declare a spread? I'm
going with Clemson on this
one. Tigers 24, Buffaloes 10.
December 27--Insight Bowl. I
still can't get used to the idea of
Rutgers being in a bowl game.
It's mostly a 'home' game for
Arizona State and they are an
11 1/2 point favorite. Sun Devils
35, Rutgers Scarlet Knights 10.
December 28--MPC Comput-
ers Bowl. This is a home game
on the blue field for Boise State
against Boston College. Boise is
a one point favorite. But, will
Boise's coach still be on the
sidelines or working in Col-
orado by that time? Will the
coaching turmoil spoil Boise's
chances? Boston College 28,
Boise 24.
December 28--Alamo Bowl. I
know what had better happen
here. It had better be 'Go Blue.'
In the Big Ten's seven games
the conference teams are
favored in four of them. Michi-
gan is one that is favored in its
battle with Nebraska. In fact,
the Wolverines have the second
largest spread of all the games,
12 points. I just hope Michigan
takes this game seriously
instead of pouting about not
getting the Outback bid. Michi-
gan 24, Nebraska 21.
December 29---Emerald Bowl.
This has definitely not been
anything close to last year's
Utah team and Georgia Tech is
an eight point favorite. Tech
has been rather up and down
this season, but might rise to
occasion one more time. Geor-
gia Tech 28, Utah 27.
December 29--Holiday Bowl.
Oregon is a three point favorite
over Oklahoma. Here's another
team that has two ways to go.
Either the Ducks will be pout-
ing about not getting a BCS bid
or they will come out with all
guns blazing to show the BCS
people they don't know what
the heck is going on. Still, Okla-
homa is Oklahoma and has
Adrian Peterson. Oklahoma 42,
Oregon 35.
December 30--Music City
Bowl. The Gophers are three
point favorites here over Vir-
ginia and I think they'll get the
job done. Minnesota 35, Vir-
ginia 10.
December 30--Sun Bowl. I'm
amazed that UCLA is only a
three and one half point
favorite over Northwestern.
Evidently the gamblers think
Brent Basanez will cause the
Bruins some problems. I don't
think it will be enough, though.
UCLA 34, Northwestern 28.
December 30---Independence
Bowl. Steve Spurrier is leading
South Carolina against a ques-
tionable Missouri team. Again,
I'm surprised that the Game-
cocks are only a three and one
half point favorite. South Car-
olina 42, Missouri 34.
December 30--Peach Bowl.
What a surprise. Two teams
that were expecting BCS bids
when the season started are
stuck in the Peach Bowl in
Atlanta. I have nothing against
LSU, but I think Miami ought to
be stuck in Boise every year. It's
because of the arrogant Hurri-
canes' taunting actions in the
late 1980's and early 1990's that
we have all these 'no celebra-
tion' rules in football now. The
gamblers have no line on this
one, either. I'm going with the
way I surely hope it comes out.
LSU 42, Miami 21.
December 31--Meineke Bowl.
Practically a home game for
North Carolina State against
South Florida. State has had
tougher competition in going
through the ACC. North Caroli-
na State 27, South Florida 17.
December 31--Liberty Bowl.
Fresno State is a seven point
favorite over Tulsa, but I think
the team that almost beat USC
will do better than that. Fresno
State 49, Tulsa 21.
December 31--Houston Bowl.
This will be practically a home
game for TCU if the Horned
Frogs had anybody who came
to watch them play. I think Iowa
State is going to be charged up
to make up for the season end-
ing loss at Kansas. Iowa State
31, TCU 24.
January 2---Cotton Bowl.:
There are eight Big 12 teams in
bowl games, but only two are
favored, Kansas and Texas
Tech. Texas Tech is a two and
one half point favorite over
Alabama. About all Alabama
has had all year has been a
defense. The question will be
how much pressure the defense
can put on the Tech quarter-
back. Texas Tech 35, Alabama
10.
January 2--Outback Bowl.
Florida is a three point favorite.
That's good enough for me.
There are a lot of people still on
that Florida team who remem-
ber the shellacking they took
two years ago. Also, I think
Urban Meyer is smart enough
not to confuse a placekicker for
a running back. Florida 28,
Iowa 24.
January 2--Gator Bowl. Vir-
ginia Tech is a seven and one
half point favorite over
Louisville. It should be quite a
battle of quarterbacks, but
Tech will prevail. Virginia Tech
38, Louisville 31.
January 2--Capital One
Bowl. Auburn is a 10 1/2 point
favorite over Wisconsin. Maybe
the Badgers can give Barry a
win in what will truly be his
last game as the Wisconsin
coach. I don't think so, though.
Auburn 24, Wisconsin 14.
January 2--Fiesta Bowl.
Ohio State is favored by three
and one half over what I think
is an overrated Notre Dame
team. However, having said
that, the Irish were able to get
themselves up to play really
tough football in the few real
challenges they had this year.
This will be the same, but I'm
hoping Ohio State will prevail.

Ohio State 21, Notre Dame 17.
January 2---Sugar Bowl. Geor-
gia is an eight point choice over
West Virginia. The Moun-
taineers have done well this
year, but playing in the Big East
is a far cry from coming
through the wars of the South-
east Conference. Georgia will
cover the spread easily, 31-17.
January 3--Orange Bowl. It's
another eight point spread,
with Penn State the favorite.
The classic battle between the
two oldtimers of college foot-
ball. In this case I think the nod
goes to Joe Pa. His Nittany
Lions have been much more
impressive than the Seminoles.
Penn State 27, Florida
State 17.
January 4---Rose Bowl. USC
is a seven point favorite. I'm
going against the gamblers
here. I think the game with
Fresno proved that USC might
be had. However, the Trojans
proved the next week against
UCLA that, when facing what
they think is a major challenge,
they're really up for it. Still,
Texas 34, USC 31.
There you have it. The offi-
cial word on how the bowl
games will come out. Alright,
everybody, place your bets and
get rich.
