Page 2 The Lone Tree Reporter On the Backroads It's going to be gobbledygook and mish-mash this week. Every- thing you read here this week has been stolen from somebody else. I don't really know why, but I don't have an original thought as I'm sitting at the computer on Sunday night. So, here goes. The first couple of items were sent to me years ago by June Lenz Everett. I can not give credit to anybody because the pages she sent (many of them) are copied from a book and there was no notation about what the book Was. I recall using some of these things years ago when I first got this envelope and then put them someplace where I'd be sure to know where to find them and then promptly forgot. So, I have to present them to you with no cred- its being given for who compiled these things. The first is titled "Why do we call it Rhode Island when it isn't one?" There are two possible reasons, and historians can't tell for sure which is correct. When explor- By Ron Rife The Lone Tree Reporter er Giovanni da Verrazano was mapping the east coast of North America in 1524, he noted in his diary that the coastline of Nar- ragansett Bay was approximately as long as that of the Greek Island of Rhodes. Subsequent explorers took it to mean that the area was in fact, an island, and the thus called it Rhode Islaad. It's an attractive theory, but so is this one: that Dutch explorer Adriaen Block (for whom Block Island is named) named the area "Red Island" because of the color of the soft. In Dutch, that's Roodt Eylandt, which became the name we use today. The next one asks: Why is "The Life of Riley" so terrific? The life of Riley is a life of easy days and carefree nights. It's an odd expression because the real Mr. Riley was anything but lazy. "Riley" was poet James Whitcomb Riley, who wrote poems like The Old Swimmin' Hole, which glori- fied the fast-fading innocence of the 19th century and comforted those who had already missed it. But it wasn't just the subject matter of his poems that inspired the expression. It was the fact that Riley's writings made him rich, the wealthiest American au- thor of his day. To "live the life of Riley" wasn't only to be barefoot and fancy free. It was also to be as well-heeled as the man who wrote about such things! Next I'm going to share with you part of a list that was recently sent to me by my cousin in East Moline. For these I can give credit to the source. Once again, The Washington Post has published the winning submissions to its yearly neologism contest in which the readers are asked to supply al- ternative meanings for common words. I'm going to share some of the winners with you this week. 1. Coffee (n.), the person upon whom one coughs. 2. Flabbergasted (adj.), ap- palled at how much weight you've gained. 3. Abdicate (v.), to give up all hope of ever having a flat stom- ach. 4. Esplanade (v.), to attempt an explanation while drunk. There are sixteen of these alto- gether so I'll have some more to share in the weeks ahead. There are also 15 word changes I'm going to make you suffer through, through which I'm going to make you suffer. (We must have correct grammar, don't you know.) Now it's time for the Thought For The Week. It is: "When you stop to think, don't forget to start again." It seems that many people do forget to start again or they never think at all and just go ahead and shoot off their mouths. The winter sports season is in full swing. The Lone Tree boy's basketball team is doing well. The girls have been up and down. The wrestlers have been competing in some big tournaments and won a :dual meet last week and also lost one. On the Iowa side the wrestling team is cruising along. They picked up the pace against Iowa :State and Northern Iowa from :what I saw against Illinois a cou- :ple of weeks ago. They'll be in 'training for these two weeks and 'then go to the Midlands at North- Western at the end of December. The men's basketball team might be better to just be ignored. The women have come through ,some tough games and have a :winning record coming into this week. There is no action for the Hawkeye teams this week, except :in the classroom taking finals. I noticed in the Sunday paper Splinters from the Bench point spread against Arizona State very easily By Ron Rife The Lone Tree Reporter Since the first bowl games will be played Saturday I suppose I had better get started on my picks for the bowl season, For some reason the bowls where Northwestern, Il- linois and Penn State are playing were not listed in the odds list. Of the seven Big Ten teams listed only two, Purdue and Michigan, were favored. There ,will be three games Sat- urday Temple is a 6 1/2 point fa- vorite over Wyoming in the New Mexico Bowl and I'll go with the odds-makers on this one. In the Fa- :that the odds makers have coneocytmusPotato Bowl Utah Ste is a.2 :up with the point spreads for the 1/2 point favorite over Ohio fr0 :b0wl games. Iowa joins Arizona- the Mid-America Conference, but I'm going against the odds-makers here and rely on Frank Solich to get the Bobcats a win. The other Saturday game is the New Orleans Bowl and San Diego State is a five point favorite. I'll go along with the odds-makers on this one. The game on December 20 is the Beef O'Brady's Bowl, where Flor- ida International is a four point favorite over Marshall. I think rll break formation on this one, toc, and go with Marshall's Thunder- ing Herd. On December 21 in the Poinsettia Bowl and 10 1/2 point favorite TCU should get the job done against Louisiana Tech. On December 22 is the MAACO Bowl and Boise State should cover the State as the biggest underdogs Of all. Oklahoma is favored by 14 !points. Boise State is a 14 point favorite against the Sun Devils. :Maybe the Hawks should try to do :like the team in an old joke I heard ,years ago. A team was a 21 point :underdog going into a game and :they refused to take the field until ::the 21 points had been put on the scoreboard. ": There is one thing that might :help Iowa, if the news is true. Sup- :pedly there are five Oklahoma starters who are injured and will miss the game. I'm just going to wait and see how many of them suddenly get cured of their inju- ries and take the field to bedevil bowl, but I'm going with RGIII and the Baylor Bears to swamp Wash- Thursday, Senior Dining December 19 - December 23 Monday, December 19: Herb Chicken Breast, Mashed Gravy, Beets, Peaches in Jello: CARDS December 20: ilil Tuesday, CarreOm p e a;h La 1 ii i Swish Steak, Mashed Potatoes Green Beans, Strawberry/Banana Jello Wednesday, December 21: Cabbage & Thursday, rots, Citrus Jello Salad: DOMINOES Friday, December 23: Crispy Chicken, Mashed Potatoes & :Tc0 Corn, Ambrosia Salad: HOLIDAY MUSIC a t/'= - All meals are served with whole wheat bread, margarine h milk unless noted. It should be South- ern all the way They've looked good when I've seen them on TV. On December 26 it's the Indepen- dance Bowl where Missouri is a 4 1/2 point favorite over North Carolina. I'm going with Mizzou on this one.. There are two games on the 27th. Purdue is a 2 1/2 point fa- vorite against Western Michigan in the Little Caesar's Pizza Bowl and I think the Boilermakers will prevail. Also on that day is the Balk Bowl where North Carolina State is a 2 1/2 point favorite over Louisville. I think Louisville has looked better in TV appearances' so I'm going with them. There are two games on the 28th.There is the Military Bowl ington in the Alamo Bowl. On December 30th the pace be- gins to really ramp up. There are four games. There were no odds for the Armed Forces Bowl be- tween Tulsa and BYU. I'm looking for Cougars to turn the Golden Hurricane into a gentle breeze. In the Pinstripe Bowl Rutgers is a two point favorite over Iowa State, but I think Coach Rhoads will have the Cyclones ready to go. After all, Rutgers doesn't play in a conference, it's in the Big East Pussycat League. There are no odds for the Music City Bowl between a pair of 6-6 teams, Wake Forest and Missis- sippi State. I'll go with Missis- sippi Sate because its 6-6 record was against some competition in the Southeast Conference where- as Wake Forest plays in the ACC. The last game that day is Iowa's Uh oh, men! Well, I'm halfway through the pile of bowl games. Hopefully, rll have the strength to get this project finished next week. The Hawks might have one thing going for them. One other time Iowa ap- peared in the same bowl two years in a row. In 1986 they went to the Holiday Bowl and came back from a 35-21 deficit to kick a field goal in the last second and win, 39-38. The next year they were back in the same bowl and, I think, used a blocked punt returned for a touch- down to nose out Wyoming, 20-19. So, while I'm not going to bet on Iowa I am certainly not going to bet the other way. Toledo's defense hasn't looked too salty when I've seen it on TV and I don't know if the Rockets can stop the Air Force triple option. Of course, Toledo can score points by the bushels so they will really test the Air Force so I'll be a chicken and go with the Rockets in this one. Also on the 28th Texas is a three point favor- ite over California in the Holiday Bowl. I agree with that choice. On the 29th there are two bowls, also. The Champs Sports Bowl has Florida State as a three point favorite over Notre Dame. I'd love to see the Seminoles win, but I don't trust the Irish to do the right thing. Maybe by picking them to win H1 jinx them. They didn't have the Hawks. odds for the other December 29th 100 Years Looking Back Looking back 100 years to De- cember 15, 1911. Fire escapes have been ordered on the Oxford opera house by the state inspector. Mrs. John Browning underwent an operation at the University hospital in Iowa City, Monday and is getting along splendidly accord- hag to reports. Chat Jarrard was taken sud- denly ill last Thursday morning and after calling Dr. A. H. DeLano, he-was hurried to the hospital at Iowa City where an operation was performed the same day for ap- pendicitis. The surgeons found his case to be of the worst type, but we are glad to report him :doing nicely at this writing. Invitations are out announcing the approaching marriage of Miss Mildred DeLano to Mr. J. Edwin Grfffith to take place at the bride's home here on Christmas night. J. B. Carter pleaded guilty to as- sault and battery on the person of Jos. R. Corbett and was fined $100 and costs. It will be remembered that Carter was bound over to the grand jury charged with beating Joseph Corbett over the head with a spade or shovel. He was later in- dicted by the grand jury on the charge of assault with intent to do great bodily injurY. The compro- mise was affected without trial. 75 Years Looking back 75 years to De- cember 17, 1936. The work is being done as a cooperative project by the farmers themselves. The community Christmas tree, erected annually by the Business Mens' association, was put in place Saturday afternoon at the intersection of DeVoe and Jayne streets and was decorated and wired Wednesday afternoon by a committee from the association. :DThe Lone Tree The Lone Tree Reporter IKEPORTER' 201er 15 x An independent newspaper and official newspaper for the City of Lone Tree, Johnson County, and the gel.
