Savings Bank originated in
August of 1901, in Lone Tree.
The first location was in the
Anton Fisher building. In 1971
F&MSB merged with Lone Tree
Savings Bank, and the early indi-

Group is 135 years old. The
offices in Des Moines employs
over 10,000, making it one of the
largest employers in the state. The
Principal is the largest prol3vider
of insurance west of Hartford,
Connecticut.

unique people, and their strong
sense of love and caring for one
another.
Father Benedict believes that it
is better to walk among friends in
small communities than to walk
among strangers in large ones. He
says that Lone Tree and Nichols
have been a special gift to him
from God.
"I will miss Father Benedict's
presence and spirit within our
faith communities," said Carol
Kaalburg, Parish Life Coordinator
at St. Mary of Nichols and Lone
Tree.
"He was always gracious and
willing to serve our people, as
needed. A particular loss will be
his kindness and caring for our
youth.., he has a special gift in
dealing with children."
Black light hike
set at Kent Park
Johnson County area residents
may participate in a black light
hike in F.W. Kent Park February
10. Johnson County Conservation
Board AmeriCorps naturalist,
Clay Steele will lead the hike
with a black light and luminous
powder to track nighttime ani-
mals near the Conservation
Education Center.
The hike will depart at 5 p.m.
from the Conservation Education
Center and will last about an
hour. Coffee and cocoa will be
provided.
Preregistration is required. To
register or for more information,
contact the naturalist at 319-645-

Indeed his presence with the
children of St. Mary's was a sight
to behold.
Father Benedict joked that
when he left Nigeria, he told his
family that he was going 'home.'
Later he told everyone in the H'all
that he wopld like to bring his
family back to Iowa, particularly
Nichols and Lone Tree, to show
them how small-communities
know and love one another.
"They [Lone Tree and Nichols
residents] have made me feel like
I belong. They make anyone feel
like they belongs" Father Benedict
added.
Father Vitalis Torwel will
serve the S'i. Mary's of Lone Tree
and Nichols perishes as
Sacramental Minister upon the
departure of Father Benedict
Okonkwo.
"1 look forward to continued
collaborative ministry with Father
Vitalis," Kaalburg said "while we
await an official appointment for
this position from Bishop
Franklin of the Diocese of
Davenport.
