Page 12 ,: Lions devour Falc ms, 66-26 by Ron Rife The Highland - Lone Tree Raiders took full advantage of facing an outmanned opponent for the first time this year, cruising to a 66-26 win at Louisa - Muscatine Friday night. Because the rain got my notebook wet I wasn't able to do play - by - play notetaking or wind up with any final statistics. I did get enough notes in the first half to give you an idea of just how dominant the Raiders were. They had a 20-0 lead in the first quarter before L&M even made • a first down. They scored the first five times they possessed the ball. The Raiders first touchdown came on a 43 yard burst up the middle by Justin Neuzil. Larry Jones' placekick for the extra point failed and it was 6-0 with 9:07 left in the quarter. The second touchdown was a 44 yard pass from Michael Hotz to Jacob Neuzil. Paal Dannevig kicked the extra point and it was 13-0 with 7:22 left in the quarter. The third Raiders touchdown came on a seven yard run by Jones. He then kicked the extra point and it was 20- 0 with 3:30 left in the quarter. On the next possession the touchdown came on a 26 yard run on by Hotz when he kept the ball on an option, turned upfield and took it into the end zone. Dannevig's placekick missed and it was 26-0 with 0:51 left in the quarter. On the next possession Jones capped the drive with an eight yard scoring dash. He then kicked the extra point and it was 33-0 with 10:27 left in the half. Louisa - Muscatine was finally able to get on the board after that. The Falcons had punted deep into Highland - Lone Tree territory. Reserves were in the game for the Raiders now and the Falcons forced a fumble, recovering at the Raiders four. Matt Day scored on the second play from three yards out. Jones blocked the extra point kick and it was 33-6 with 6:19 left in the half. The Falcons got their second touchdown on another turnover just before the end of the half. Highland - Lone Tree had driven deep into L&M ter- ritory when Andy Fry stepped in and picked off a Marcus Hall pass and took it back 95 yards for a touchdown. The conversion attempt failed and the score was 33-12 with 0:27 left in the half. In the second half the Raiders' onslaught contin- ued. Jacob Neuzil scored on a 15 yard run. Jones kicked the extra point and it was 40-12 with 10:22 left in the third. Next, Nik Petersen picked off a pass and returned it 25 yards for a touchdown. Jones again kicked the point and it was 47-12 with 8:35 left in the quarter. Hotz then got another touchdown on a two yard run. Dannevig kicked the extra point and it was 54-12 with 4:07 left in the third. Day got a touchdown for L&M on a three yard run and then failed on a run for the conversion, leav- ing the score at 54-18 with 1:19 left in the third quar- ter. The Falcons got another touchdown early in the fourth and got a two point conversion to make the score 54-26 and then the Raiders tacked on two more. First, Rob Chamberlain scored on a three yard run. A run by quarterback Jack Larew fell short and the score was 60-26 with 4:32 left. The final touchdown came after Zachary Ryerson recovered a Falcons fumble at the L&M one.Tysen Frees scored the touchdown. A run for the extra point failed and it was 66-26 with 2:01 left. The Hawkeyes have some real depth now. In 1999 they would have been totally dominated by the competition with so many front liners out with injuries because there were not quality replacements. This year there are. I'm not going through the litany of all the injured players Iowa has. You've read all about that in the dailies. Just say that it's about two tons more than there were last year. Still, Iowa has been competi- tive against the good teams. The Hawks beat Michigan, might very well have beaten Ohio State then really dominated Penn State much more than the score indicates. Iowa's slogan has been "Next man in." However the next man in at some of the positions is gettin: almost non - existent. Be honest, now. How many of yo u had heard of Warren Holloway before Saturday? I might have read about him or heard of him when he was recruited, but I've since forgotten about him because he hasn't been playing. But he played a lot Saturday and made a key catch on Iowa's first toucdown drive. Illinois shows up this Saturday. It's another game in which Iowa will be favored. However, it is also likely to be the last time this year the Hawks will be favored. They have to go to Purdue on November 8th, come home for Minnesota on the 15th, and then to Wisconsin to finish up on the 22nd. Those are going to be very tough games. The thing Iowa has to do this week is not look past Illinois. It would be very easy to do. The Illini haven't beaten a Division I-A school this year. Their lone victory was over I- AA Illinois State. Not only haven't they won any games except that, for the most part they have been getting pounded every week. Hopefully they can keep up the 'getting pounded' mentality for one more week.
