Well, the
Raiders finally
had a 'fun' game
last week. It was
a game in which
they were very
much the domi-
nant team and
had things their
way from the
By Ron Rife beginning. After
going through
seven tough games it was nice for
them to get a game like that
before the end of the season. It
wasn't much 'fun' for L&M, how-
ever. The Falcons, once again, are
suffering through a season in
which they don't seem to be very
competitive in district play. Since
they have one win for the season
they obviously beat someone in
the first two weeks in non - dis-
trict play, but they're 0-6 in dis-
trict play with Williamsburg left
to play.
The Raiders close the season
this week with a game at Lone
Tree against Clear Creek
Amana. It will Parent's Night.
Clear Creek - Amana comes in
with a 2-4 record in the district
and 2-6 overall. An effort like the
one last Friday should give the
Raiders a victory and let them fin-
ish the season 4-3 in the district.
Since I'm figuring Tipton is going
to beat Mid - Prairie this week
that would leave Highland - Lone
Tree and Mid -Prairie tied for
third in the district.
On the Iowa scene, the
Hawkeye offense continues to be
rather inconsistent. On some
occasions Saturday they moved
the ball down the field very well.
On other occasions it was pretty
ugly. The drive deep into Penn
State territory just before Penn
State scored was a good one. By
the way, for all of you Nathan
Chandler haters out there, that
intercepted pass that was run back
for a touchdown wasn't his fault.
Put the blame on Tony Jackson, I
think. It looked like #81 on the
left end of the line on that play.
He was playing tight end and was
supposed to block Yisrael on that
play, leaving a path for Ochoa to
run and Chandler to throw.
Jackson missed the block, Yisrael
stepped forward and there was the
ball so he grabbed it and went 83
yards for a touchdown.
It was rather disconcerting,
though, to look at the scoreboard
at the end of the first quarter and
see that Iowa had all kinds of
yards and no points and Penn
State had a total of one yard of
offense and seven points. It sort of
made you wonder what other
kinds of weird things were going
to happen in that game that might
wind up giving JoePa his first
conference win of the year.
But, the Hawks got things
going their way and managed to
two touchdowns to get the 12-7
halftime lead. Besides the
blocked punt for the touchdown
there was another play in the third
quarter that, I think, symbolizes
the tenaciousness of this Iowa
defense. Penn State completed a
pass to a back out in the left flat
and Bob Sanders was right there
to make the tackle. The receiver
juked and jived, trying to fake
Sanders out, but he steadily
moved in, not being faked, and
made the tackle for about a two
yard loss. I told the guy sitting
next to me that looked like a lion
stalking a gazelle on the African
plains. You just knew that, no
matter which way that 'gazelle'
moved, there was going to be no
escape from 'lion' #33.
I also couldn't help thinking,
