This Lone Tree football team
is moving through a rarified at-
mosphere. I think you can count
on one hand the number of Lone
Tree teams that have had no loss-
es or only one loss before this year,
since Lone Tree started playing
football in 1919.
According to some fast research
that I have done Lone Tree had a
one loss team in 1927, a no loss
and one tie team in 1928, the same
for 1938, an 8-1 record for the 1963
team that I wrote about a couple
of weeks ago and a 9-0 regular sea-
son record for the 1997 combined
Highland-Lone Tree that made the
state championship game. Even
the 1982 State Champions had
two losses in the regular season.
I don't really know about the 1984
team that was State Runnerup.
These teams did not become
good just by walking out onto the
field and saying "Okay, we're Lone
Tree. Give us our victory" They
worked at it. They had many good
players who worked as a team. In
Lone Tree's case football is an 11
man game. Each one of the 11 on
each play has a job to do and must
do it or the team will not be suc-
cessful. When the team has the
ball the linemen up front must
root out running room for the
backs carrying the ball or must
make sure the quarterback has
time to throw that pass for the
first down or the touchdown.
On defense the linemen and
linebackers are primarily respon-
sible for stopping the run. The
defensive backs, along with the
linebackers, are responsible for
shutting down the passing game.
The interception is the big thing.
As we found out in the Iowa-
Northwesern game an intercep-

Lion can change the complexion
of the game in a hurry. Or last
year's bowl game with Missouri. I
haven't seen the latest stats, but at
one time this year Lone Tree was
leading the state in interceptions.
The offensive line and the whole
defense usually labors pretty
much in obscurity The players get
mentioned for making a tackle or
recovering a fumble or intercept-
ing a pass, but they don't get the
headlines like the quarterbacks,
running backs and receivers.
These are the players who pri-
marily labor in anonymity. They
have worked hard during the sum-
mer lifting weights and they have
worked hard during the season
to perfect their skills. The same
could be said for the reserves who
sometimes get into games when
the outcome is no longer in doubt.
Tom Dickey, who does the R A.
work at the football games does
a good job of calling attention
to the offensive line after a good
play or the defense after a good
stand. Without those anonymous
players there would be no hole in
the opposition for the ball carrier
to run, and there have certainly
been some beautiful holes for
those backs this year. There has
also been good protection for pass
plays.
On the other side, I actually
began to feel a bit sorry for the
Winfield-Mt. Union quarterback
last Friday and for the Wolves
running backs. They had nowhere
to go except to the ground. That
quarterback must have been re-
ally bumped and bruised by the
time the game was over. Accord-
ing to my scribbling W-MU had
27 running plays. They lost yard-
age on nine of them. At least one
of them was an attempted pass
when the Lone Tree D-Line sim-
ply smothered the quarterback.
They wound up with a net of 42
yards rushing. The Lions partial-
ly blocked a couple of punts. They
had at least one interception and
a couple of fumble recoveries to

give Lone Tree unexpected posses-
sion of the ball. Those anonymous
defensive people were doing their
job. So, remember for the future.
Give plenty of cheers to the guys
who don't make the headlines.
Lone Tree plays host to Iowa Val-
ley (Marengo) in the first round of
the playoffs on Wednesday night.
(Tonight for those of you who get
your paper on Wednesday.) Iowa
Valley brings a 6-3 record to Lone
Tree. If the Lions win that game
they will play again on Monday
night.
