Foi- many centuries, the ancient craft of builders - masons who worked with stone erecting temples, cathedrals, and public wor - sh-ared high standards of workmanship and conduct. The brotherhood of these stonemasons worked in stone and were designated as Apprentices, Fellows and Master Masons. The tools of their trade were the square, compass, plumbline, level, trowel and othe inslruments of precision work- manship. Over two hundred years ago, the great principals of operating masons were adopted by countless others who did not necessarily work in stone. Ever since, others have joined voluntarily in thods of local groups called 'lodges ' that are dedi- cated to the same principals of broth- erhood, rectitude, sobriety, charity, and motivated by a common dedica- tion to high ethical and spiritual pur- poses. Using the words and titles of the ancient craft of masonry, Masons today band together for building, not smacmres of stone, but men of char- acter...'II)ere.is a vigorous force in the ancient msutution of the "ledge" that continually gives fresh meaning to toda masomc goals. Mason insists that every man has the right to freedom of worship and freedom of expression, the rigtit to vote according to his conscience and the right to a public education. A Mason honors other men by respe.c.ting each mans dignity, by assisting a brother Mason, or any man in need and by devotion to his com- munity's welf',ire. Several readings were shared.
