Nichols News

Nichols October Festival
Saturday, October 6th, was a
cold, windy, day for Nichols Oc-
tober Festival. However, it didn't
keep the kids from having a fun
filled day playing football, hav-
ing their faces painted, egg toss,
plank races, tractor pulls, and
music. The adults, however, were
not as tolerant of the cool weath-
er. A total of 150 tickets were dis-
tributed at the gate, however, not
everyone came in by the gate.
The winners of the car/tractor
show were as follows; Favorite
tractor is a 1972 John Deere owned
by Gone Walker. The car category
was a tie between a 1972 Chevelle
owned by Stephanie Jansen, and
a 1939 Hudson owned by Mervin
Mills. Prizes were awarded to both.
The Plank Race was won by the
team of Bryce Carrier, Blayne
McAtee and Briston McAtee. The
Egg Toss was won by the team of
Niko Gosnell and Desi Martinez.
I was unable to get all the names
for the Corn Hole Tournament.
However, I was told the winners
were Andy Kirchner and his part-
ner, Arnie (last name unknown).
The Water Ball Tournament
was won again this year by the
Riverdale Fire Department,
which also won 2nd place. Third
place was won by the Stanwood
Fire Department. Also joining
in the cold water battle were
Fire Departments from LeClair,
West Liberty, Tiffin and Nichols.

Future events to put on your

vember 6th. More information
will be supplied at a later date.

The city officials are getting
legal advice as to how to proceed
in the matter of moving the stock
yards. Although the date once
fixed for its removal is past, the
Rock Island has thus far paid no
attention to the notice served on
them by the local board of health.
There is nothing yet for publi-
cation in the investigation made
by the post office inspector as to
the alleged misconduct of one
of the local rural carriers. Time
alone will tell whether or not the
rumors now going the rounds are
true, but at present the post office
department will give out nothing
for publication.

able. Mrs. Jehle jumped out with
the above results. Mrs. Lutz re-
mained in the buggy but was
pulled out later and received sev-
eral scratches and bruises.

Please celebrate "Wreaths ACROSS America"
Dear editor,
Three years ago I became the
Johnson County Wreaths Across
America Youth Ambassador.
While volunteering I have partici-
pated in the December ceremony
at Oakland Cemetery, marked
graves for wreath placement, and
have laid wreaths in both the Lone
Tree and Oakland Cemetery in
Iowa City.
I recently learned the laying
of wreaths and the ceremony
will not take place this year. But,
I would still like to ask our com-
munity to honor veterans buried
in the Lone Tree Cemetery, if you
are able, by purchasing a wreath
to place on a grave.
The Lone Tree middle school
students are selling evergreen
wreaths from now until October
19. I encourage you to purchase a
wreath to place on a grave. I am
offering to place the wreath after
they arrive if you are not able
and will also place it on a specific
grave if requested.
I hope you will be able to join
my family in honoring the men
and women who have served our
country.
Sincerely,
Eric Slaughter
Neuzil Appointed to Labor Committee
Johnson County Supervisor
Terrence Neuzil is the newest
member of the National Associa-
tion of Counties (NACo) Labor
and Employment Steering Com-
mittee. Neuzil was nominated
by the Iowa State Association of
Counties and appointed and con-
firmed by Chris Rodgers, Presi-
dent of NACo. Neuzil is the only
elected official from Iowa who
will serve on the committee that
will focus on efforts pertaining
to employer-employee relations,
including personnel policy and
practice; merit systems; equal
employment opportunity; collec-
tive bargaining; pensions; fringe
benefits; occupational safety and
health; workers' compensation
and Social Security.
"Committee membership at the
national level is a serious com-
mitment and a big responsibil-
ity, even more so this year with a
federal administration engaged
in developing policy on a number
of issues facing counties and a
new Congress to be convened next
year," said Rodgers.
All matters pertaining to em-
ployment programs and the jobs
aspects of welfare reform includ-
ing youth employment; public
service employment; vocational
education; migrant and Native
American programs; rural man-
power; employment security; and
unemployment insurance.
"Decisions at the Federal level
have huge impacts at the local
level," said Neuzil. "We have 500
plus employees that I will be look-
ing out for."
Neuzil, who is completing his
third term in office, has been an
active member of NACo. He cur-
rently serves as a member of the
NACo Information Officers As-
sociation (NACio) and is a past
member of the Environment and
Energy Steering Committee.
