Raiders thump Mediapolis 42,15
by Ron Rife
staff writer
Highland (Ainsworth -
Riverside) - Lone Tree ruined
Mediapolis' Homecoming Friday
night, overcoming a fired up bunch
of Bulldogs to post a 42-15 win in
Class 2A District 8 play. "Maybe
I'm greedy" said Raiders Coach,
Dan Dickel, after the game. "We
have high expectations and there
were a lot of things that didn't please
me. We need to be ready to start at
the beginning of the game. We had
some distractions this week which
we didn't handle. We ran well. Now
we have Homecoming at Lone Tree
next week and more distractions:'
Indeed, it was Mediapolis that
was really ready to start from the
opening kickoff. The Bulldogs ran
the kickoff back to their 30 and
drove to the opening score of the
night. It took them 18 plays and over
half of the first quarter, but they got
the ball in the end zone. The touch-
down came on a one yard run by
quarterback Kyle Hauenstein. Bryan
Spears kicked the extra point and
Medapolis led, 7-0, with 4:36 left in
the quarter.
From that point on, the Raiders
pretty much got their act together
and dominated the game. The
Raiders scored on their first four
possessions. The first score came on
a 62 yard, nine play drive. Josh
Zaruba called his own number for
the touchdown, rolling around end
on a option for the final 15 yards.
Larry Jones kicked the extra point
and it was 7-7 with 0:15 left in the
quarter.
The Raiders struck quickly after
forcing a punt that went out of
bounds on their 48. On first down
Michael LaRoche cruised over the
left side for 49 yards. Mike Poch
then drove over from the three.
Jones extra point made it 14-7 with
11:16 left in half. After forcing
another Mediapolis punt, the
Raiders started from their 23. On the
10th play of the 77 yard drive
Zaruba again took off with the ball,
cruising 25 yards for the touchdown.
Jones again added the extra point,
making it 21-7 with 4:30 left in the
half. Zaruba quickly put the Raiders
on the offense again when he inter-
cepted a pass at the Mediapolis 40.
Again, it took H-LT two plays.
Zamba threw an incomplete pass on
first down. On second down, he
rolled to his right looking for a
receiver, found none, tucked the ball
under his arm and cut back left, rac-
ing the 40 yards for the score. Jones
again added the point after and it
was 28-7 with 3:12 left in the half.
The Raiders picked up in the
third quarter right where they left off
at halftime. Returning the second
half kickoff to their own 40, they
used 12 plays to cover the 60 yards.
Jones got the final four yards for the
score and then added the extra point,
making it 35-7 with 6:38 left in the
third period.
An interception in the end zone
killed the Raiders next possession,
but they scored quickly on their first
possession of the fourth stanza.
Taking bver on their 38, the Raiders
ran three plays. LaRoche ran for
four, Jones ran for four, and then La
Roche got loose for 54 yards and the
touchdown. Jones' conversion made
it 42-7 with 9:43 left. Mediapolis
finally got its offense going again.
Starting from their 23 the Bulldogs
scored in nine plays. Hauenstein
covered the final three yards on a
bootleg. Hauenstein passed to
Spears for the two point conversion
making the score 42-15 with 5:21
left.
Unofficially, the Raiders had 17
first downs, 339 net rushing yards
on 43 attempts completed four of
nine passes for 50 yards and had one
intercepted, were
times for32 yards;
and lost one. LaRoche was Raiders
leading rusher with 150 yards in l0
carries, Mediapolis had 13 first
downs, 66 net rushing yards on 36
attempts, completed 17 of 31 passes
for 175 yards and had four intercept-
ed, and were penalized fourtimes
for 40 yards.
The Raiders face West
Burlington - Notre Dame this week
at Lone Tree. It's Lone Tree's
Homecoming.
Pictured at top, the Raider's kicker tries for the extra point, which
was good. Above, one player is tackled, but keeps a tight grip on
the ball.
