again be participating in the Hunger
Drive. They will be competing
against other Johnson County
schools to collect the most non-per-
ishable food per student. Last year
the students were able to collect
4,800 pounds of food. This year the
students hope to exceed that amount
with the help of the community.
All of the food that is collected
will be given to the Crisis Center in
Iowa City, which serves all of
Johnson County. The food bank
services are available for all those
residents of Johnson County needing
emergency and supplemental food
assistance. Food is distributed on
Monday, Wednesday, and Friday,
from noon to 4:30 p.m. There are
approximately 350 households that
receive food and other material sup-
port from there each week.
The Hunger DriVe Kick-Off
Rally wag held on Oct. 2 at the Crisis
Center to create excitement and rally
support among the students.
Representatives from IMS, Regina,
not to mention Lone Tree, competed
in the rap/cheer contest. This year
the students from Lone Tree sang a
song about the Hunger Drive to the
tune of the "Iowa Fight Song." Lone
Tree received first place and won
$100. Each school will receive $500
just for participating and the first
prize (most pounds per student) will
receive and additional $500. An
award of $100 will go to the school
that presented the most creative
event during the Hunger drive.
Besides just collecting food for
those in need, the Hunger Drive
gives students a chance to help their
school and other community groups
in need. It not only promotes volun-
teerism and community involvement
, but also gives the students the
opportunity to develop organization-
al skills a "real life" exan]ple of how
to get things done through team-
work.
