Raiders blast L&M Friday59-6
By Ron Rife
Staff Writer
The Highland (Ainsworth -
Riverside) - Lone Tree Raiders
started slowly against Louisa -
Muscatine Friday night, but picked
up steam as the game progressed.
The result was a happy
Homecoming at Highland with a
59-6 victory for the Raiders.
The Raiders were in a battle
early in the game as L&M took the
opening kickoff and drove deeply
into H-LT territory. The defense
finally stiffened and the Raiders
took over the ball on their own
seven yard line. From there
Highland - Lone Tree mounted a 15
play drive to put the first points on
the board. Mike Poch picked up the
score with a 10 yard run. Larry
Jones kicked the extra point and it
was 7-0 with 3:07 left in the first
quarter.
Louisa - Muscatine came right
back with another good drive, start-
ing from its 29. This time the
Falcons found the end zone, the
touchdown coming on the 8th play
of the drive, a 26 yard pass from
Hernandez to Riggan. The extra
point try failed and it was 7-6 with
0:15 left in the quarter. That was as
good as it was going to get for the
Falcons.
The Raiders returned the kickoff
to their 34 and started a five play
drive. The big play was a 47 yard
pass from Josh Zaruba to Poch that
put the Raiders on the 13. After a
penalty set them back Zaruba
passed to Poch tor 19 yards and the
touchdown. Jones kicked the extra
point and it was/4-6 with 10:38 left
in the half. The Raiders got a short
field for their next drive. On L&M's
first play Zaruba intercepted a
Hemandez pass and H-LT had the
ball at the L&M 21. That was one of
five turnovers suffered by the
Falcons. It was three play drive.
Zaruba started it with a 16 yard run
and a face mask penalty put the ball
at the three. Poch picked up two and
then Zaruba went the final yard for
the score. The kick failed and it was
20-6 with 9:29 left in the half and
stayed at way.
The Raiders got the ball for the
second time in the second half on
another interception, this one by
Dustin Lenz pass. Again, the con-
version failed and it was 26-6 with
6:56 left in the quarter.
The Raiders started their next
scoring drive late in the third quarter
after stopping L&M at the Raiders
38. Again, it was a five play drive,
the big one being a 28 yard "Zaruba
to Poch pass. "Zaruba passed for six
yard to Adam Rees for the touch-
down. A pass for the conversion was
incomplete and it was 32-6 with
11:29 left in the game. The Falcons
drove into Raiders territory again,
but a fumble shut them down.
Andrew Varney pounced on the ball
at the Raiders 37. On the sixth play
Zamba got around end and raced the
final 35 yards for the touchdown.
Jones kicked the extra point to make
the score 39-6 with 6:48 left. The
Raiders struck again quickly. On the
Falcons first play Rees jumped on a
fumble, giving H-LT the ball at the
L&M 24. On the second play James
Musack rumbled 16 yards for the
score. Jones kick made the score 46-
6 with 6:37 remaining. Again,
Raider lightning struck quickly. On
second and four Scott Klemp inter-
cepted a pass and dashed 25 yards to
score. John Hansen kicked the extra
point making it 53-6 with 5:07 left.
In 1:41 the Raiders had put 21
points on the board. Highland -
Lone Tree's last possession started
at the 50. Once again it took five
plays. Justin Neuzil scored on a 17
yard to to end the game with ! :27
Icft. There was no conveion try.
"We scored 33 points in the
tburth quarter'?" said Raiders coach
Dan Dickel. It wasn't as if they were
trying to run up the score. Reserves
played most of the quarter. It was
just one of those snowballs that
started downhill and kept rolling.
"This was another team victory.
Now comes October and the four
most important games are ahead.
Seniors, you are over halfway
through your senior year. We did a
lot of good things tonight, but we
need .to get better. Mediapolis is
next and they are a good passing
team," Dickel told the team after the
game. Alter the team had filed to the
locker room he said " This was a
good night to get through. We have
a good offense, but the detnse still
ha a ways to go."
The Raiders racked up 21 first
downs. They had a net of 338 yards
on 54 rushes, threw 12 passes, com-
pleted eight with no interceptions
and gained 138 yards. They were
penalized five times for 65 yards.
Zaruba was the leading ball carrier
with 97 yards in 12 carries. Poch
was the leading receiver with three
catches for 94 yards. "You know,"
Dickel said, "neither of our tail-
backs scored tonight, but others
took up the slack."
Louisa - Muscatine had 15 first
downs, a net of 103 yards on 24
rushes, threw 31 passes, completed
12, had three intercepted, and
gained 120 yards. They were penal-
ized five times for 43 yards and lost
two of three fumbles.
