The average weekly first-
llace prize is $500. Bob Har-
riagton from Wilton is the car
OWner. A race-ready car costs
from $20,000 to $25,000.
"You can put a cheap car on
the road for $15,000 but the
egine alone in this car cost
$12,000," Herring said. "I had
raced motorcycles and ATVs
on flat tracks all over the U.S.
When I started racing cars, I
had my own car. Harrington
decided to put some money into
it."
The changes made on a mod-
ified-division car are unlimit-
ed. But, they all run the same
size and brand of tire; Ameri-
can Racer.
The regular point season
starts the second week in April
and runs through Labor Day.
They run every weekend
unless it rains. Some tracks are
muddy; some are dry and slick.
Now that the point season is
over they are going to race a
couple more weekends in the
new car, replacing the one that
was totaled, for added money
and for fun.
Herring is going on to race in
Oskaloosa, where the prize for

I On Tuesday, November 8, the
[ Citizens of Lone Tree will head
the .polls to get their say on
! ::Who will fill four vacancies on
'the City Council.
The position of mayor and
three council seats will be up
for grabs. Applications are
available at City Hall and the
deadline for applying is Thurs-
:day, September 22 at 5 p.m.
Along with the application,
[:::candidates must also have a
[ letition with 20 signatures and
addresses of Lone Tree resi-
I dents who plan to support
[them.
]: As of Tuesday morning, the
application turned in to
:City Hall is that of Coun-
cilmember FAce Brown, who is
: Up for re-election.
Mayor Shelley Allison is up
for re-election and has said that
she intends to run, but so far
has not turned in her applica-
tion.
Councilmember Melinda
Wieland's term is up this
November and she does not
intend to run. Wieland has said
that her schedule is full and
doesn't feel she has the time to
devote to the position. Despite
rumors circulating around
town, Wieland said she had no
plans to run for mayor nor does
her husband intend to run for
office.
"I would like to thank every-
one for their support," Wieland
said.
Councilmember Dave
Smith's term will be up in
November as well. Smith was
appointed to the position last
January to replace Les
Schaapveld who resigned for
health reasons.
"I will not be running for re-
election," Smith said. "I feel
that there are enough people in
town who think they can do a
better job. I would like to give
them the opportunity to run."
According to the city clerk,
many people have picked up
applications from City Hall but
are possibly waiting until the
last minute to turn them in.
Confirmation class to
hold bake sale to benefit
hurricane relief effort
A hurricane relief bake
sale, sponsored by the 2006
Confirmation Class of St.
Mary's Lone Tree and
Nichols Catholic Church,
will be held Friday night,
September 23.
The event will take place
just prior to the Raiders
Homecoming Football Game
at the Lone Tree Football
Field.
Members of the class are
Kelsey Acord, Sarah Brug-
man, Derek Carter, Brittany
Danielson, Dani Gillham,
Derek Havel, Matt Lively,
Hannah Loan, Tim Loan,
Nick Petsel and Eric Trues-
dale. Teachers are Jim and
Carol Lively and Lura Loan.
The rolls will be made in
Lura Loan's kitchen and pro-
ceeds will be given to a rep-
utable relief organization:

of St. Mary-'s Church of Lone
and Nichols will hold a

before the Homecoming Game
at Lone Tree Field.
Hurricane Relief Dinner
September 24
A Hurricane Relief Supper -
will be held at the American
Legion in Columbus Junction
on September 24 at 5 p.m.
Music will be provided by
"One Touch" from 6-7 p.m, A $5

Old Settlers Meeting
September 25
The Old Settlers Association
will meet, Sunday, September
25 at 6:30 p.m. at Walker Park,
River Junction. The meeting
will be followed by supper. All
members are encouraged to
attend.
Legion Auxiliary Dinner
October 4
The Lone Tree American
Legion Auxiliary will hold a
free dinner for paid up mem-
bers on Tuesday, October 4.
Reservations must be made by
September 28.
