Nichols News
By: Toni Wilson
Community events are big hit
Beautiful weather on August 29
and September 6th contributed
to the excellent turn-out for two
community events. The "Movie in
the Park", sponsored by the Nich-
ols Betterment Committee, on
Saturday, August 29th featuring
Robin Williams in HOOK was at-
tended by close to 100 children and
adults. The movie was shown on
the stage of the bandshell at Me-
morial Park and the audience was
seated on lawn chairs, blankets
on the ground, picnic tables and
park benches. The only unwel-
come guests were the mosquitoes
which were dispatched with a bit
of insect repellent. Hopefully, the
Betterment Committee will spon-
sor more movies next summer.
The concert by "Sheltered Re-
ality" on September 6th was at-
tended by 75 or more, and enjoyed
by all.
New playground
equipment
installed
On Labor Day, September 1,
2014, and Wednesday, September
3, a wonderful group oS volun-
teers from Iowa City and Nichols
assembled and installed the last
two pieces of playground equip-
ment in Nichols City Park, for the
Nickels for Nichols Project, which
started raising funds in 2009.
The volunteers from Nichols
are: Charlie Hazen, Krista Kuep-
ker, Dee Walker and son, Jacob,
Linda Logan and husband, Char-
lie, John Stroppel, Sue Schlapkohl
and husband, Jerry, Marv Wilson
and wife, Toni. Todd Lorack exca-
vated the area for the play equip-
ment, and Kory Kaalberg used
his backhoe to set the assembled
pieces into place.
The volunteers from Iowa City
deserve special thanks for giv-
ing up their Holiday. They were
recruited by Karen Kelly, Toni
Wilson's daughter, who was tired
of hearing her mother talk about
getting the playground finished.
At their request, only their first
names are listed as follows; Jason,
Charlie, Terri, Kenny, Zach, Chris,
Linda, Kathy, Todd, Karen, Jackie,
Emma, and Jeff.

::-RIP Iolin Hayek
Iowa City lost a treasure with
the passing of local attorney John
Hayek. I had the pleasure of work-
ing with John on a few projects,
and he was really a gem. John was
brilliant, kind, generous, and a real
gentleman. My condolences to his
family and friends.
Thanks, Sandy!
Congratulations to Sandy Pickup
on her retirement from the Crisis
Center. Sandy has served the needi-
est folks in our community for
many years now - first at the Free
Medical Center, and recently at the
Crisis Center. I have long admired
this pillar of our community
Sandy is an easy person to like.
Unfortunately, due to her selfless-
ness, she is also an easy person to
take for granted. So please take a
moment to thank Sandy for her
years of service.
Congrats and good luck, Sandy!
Rock On, Ross!
Former ICCSD Equity Director,
Crisis Center Director, and Iowa
City Mayor Ross Wilburn is leaving
Iowa City for a job with the Iowa
State Extension in Ames.
This is a huge loss to our com-
munity There were many times
over the years where I disagreed
with Ross. I often wanted him to be
bolder and exert greater leadership.
But that is not who Ross is. Ross
is thoughtful, deliberative, and
careful. He is also one of the most
genuine, kind, decent, and honest
people we have ever elected. I am
sad to see him go on a personal
level, but I'm also sad politically I
really thought Ross would make a
great State Representative some
day
Good luck, Ross. Stay true to the
black and gold!
Good Luck Greggl
I am often critical of the local
press. That criticism is deserved,
but not by everyone in every orga-
nization. The reporters I know are
all overworked, underpaid, do not
get the column inches they need,
and are not given the resources
they deserve.
Gregg Hennigan from the Ga-
zette is as good as any reporter
with whom I have had the privilege
of working. Unfortunately, Gregg is
leaving journalism for the PR field.
Thanks, Gregg, and good luck.
You will be missed!
Opinion Piece
You may have read the opinion
piece in the Press Citizen dated Sat-
urday, August 3O. In it, Mayor Matt
Hayek and Councilor Susan Minas
made several interesting points. I
agreed with a couple; I strongly dis-
agreed with others.
But you will never hear a con-
versation on these (or any other)

Since we cannot discuss any-
thing in public, I'll make two points
here: First, the title of the article is,
"Iowa City Leaders Welcome Fact
Based Discussion." Ummm... no,
they do not.
Want a fact-based discussion?
Allow the public to speak at a work
session. Televise said work session.
Take feedback from someone other
than City staff. Hire an economist
to decide these "facts". Meet with
another elected body Do almost ev-
erything different than the way you
currently do it.
Where was the fact-based discus-
sion on the last TIF? The Council
ignored a petition signed by over
2000 citizens in that case.
Come on. You don't REALLY
want a fact-based discussion. There
is simply no evidence for that state-
ment.
Secondly, in the piece, they say,
"the City Council's commitment to
affordable housing should be appar-
ent from the ballot language for the
proposed Local Option Sales Tax."
That language fails to make any-
thing "apparent". Here are the facts
- affordable housing is the number
one problem facing Iowa City. It
has hit crisis proportions. EVERY
Councilor save one promised to im-
prove the situation as a candidate.
That is 6 votes, minimum.

Lone Tree Football...
I thought we responded well to
that."
Lone Tree travels to Keosau-
qua on Friday night to take on
Van Buren Community, who has
a 1-1 record following a 28-13 loss
to Montezuma. Van Buren fea-
tures a balanced attack with 231
rushing yards on 58 carries and
317 passing yards on 37 attempts
on the season so far. Senior sig-
nal caller Garrett Saunders leads
the team in passing and rushing
and is third in class A in total of-
fense. Lone Tree has won the last
two meetings with Van Buren by a
combined score of 90-0.

The Lions got a break after the
kickoff when Wieland jumped on
a fumble at the Belle Plaine 25.
However, the Belle Plaine defense
stiffened and Lone Tree failed to
score.
From their 25 the Plainsmen
started their final scoring drive
which carried over into the fourth
quarter. Slaymaker got the touch-
down on a two-yard run and Trey
Squiers ran for the conversion to
end the coring at 34-21 with 9:37
left in the game.
"We didn't execute as well as
we would have liked to tonight,
but Belle Plaine was very physi-
cal at the line of scrimmage, and
we'll learn from this game and
get more physical ourselves,"
said coach Shield. "I thought our
guys responded at halftime, we
kind of got punched in the mouth
