THE sign on the frosted window
said "Nick's Diner- Booths for
Ladies," so the sailor pushed the
door open and walked in. He strad-
died a stool at the counter, in front
of a man slicing buns for ham-
burgers. "Are you Nick?" The
boy's voice was pleasant. "Do you
own this place?"
The cook went
Ion sIicing. "Yeah,
-Mi te
I'm Nick. Why?"
~|~| His answer was in-
different, almost
gruff.
The sailor grinned good-natured-
ly, toying with a salt shaker. "Did
you know a guy named Pandopou-
los? He was in the Navy."
Nick flipped the buns on the
fryer and left them to toast while
he faced the youth. "Sure I knew
him. A good boy." His face was
expressionless. "What's it to
you?" Nick's blank stare seemed
to trouble the. boy a little, but he
persisted.

Your brood sow is a pig fac-
tory. And like any factory she
must have the right kind and
quality of materials to do her
job right. If she's not fed right
during the gestation period,
small litters may result. To
keep up her own body she of-
ten resorbs the tiny embryos
... so you lose pigs you never see!
Condition your sows for big litters of thrifty
pig's with Purina Sow and Pig Chow. The Purfna

the country every day.., it was built by 32,000 hogs

] and wait on this boy. He is a
! friend of Pandopoulos." He led the
sailor to the booth and started him
off with a bowl of Nick's special
oyster stew. "A bet," he said,
putting down the steaming plate,
"is a beL Pandy was a good boy."
For the next hour the boy ate
steadily, with the amazing appetite
of the young. Nick broiled a steak
he had been saving for his own
Sunday meal, and out-did himself
on the salad and sFde dishes. The
boy could hardly move as he
squirmed from the booth. He
patted the tight blue cloth over
his stomach. "No belts to let out
on these things." he observed.
"But I won't be wearing them
much longer." He shook hands
with his host. "Gee, that was swell,
Nick. Vehen you see Pandy, thank
him for me--and tell him to drop
me a line at home, He has the
address."
His wife was clearing the table
when Nick turned back from the
door. She was smiling, her eyes
slightly moist. "Nieky," she ques-
tioned, "that boy--he made a bet
with Pandopoulos?"
Nick nodded and looked out the
window, where the sailor was
ambling contentedly away.
"He is the fourth one already,
this. week," she went on. "Maybe
he be the last." But her voice con-
tradicted her words: their own
son, too, was in the Navy,
Rare as it was for him, Nick
smiled openly at his wife's disap-
pearing back. "What the heck,
[ Mamma," he called. No use telling
