Every day, Iowans depend on their local newspaper for important information VChen your customers want to connect to the news makers and shakers in your community, your newspaper is the p|ace to go. No one takes the time to tell the whole story like we do- Splinters from the Bench The summer sports seasons for Lone Tree are winding down. The baseball team has a home game on July 1, a road game at Central City on July 7, and the District Tourna- ment starts on July 9. The softball team will be at the Mid-Prairie Tournament this weekend, travels to Columbus Junction on July 5 and opens Regional Tournament play on July 7. The softball team went to Urbandale last weekend. While they didn't win any games they acquitted themselves well against larger school competition. They lost to Dallas Center-Grimes and Fort Dodge by identical 7-0 scores. Remember, July 30 is Parents Night for softball. For what it's worth, Iowa piled up a bunch of football commitments for 2012 in the last few days. With the addition of a punter/kicker from West Virginia that makes the total now five verbal commitments for next year's class. Now, keep in mind that these are not binding. Players commit, decommit and re- commit all the time. It's not official until the name is on the line on the letter of intent. The national magazines don't giveIowa much respect for this fall. Thai might be a good sign. It seems that Iowa does better when it's not highly thought of and can keep sneaking up on people. Just look at the last few years. In 2008 Iowa was like this year, coming off a bad year that didn't even get a bowl bid. The Hawks did pretty well. They were more highly thought of in 2009 and did really well. The one thing that could have stopped them did, The injury to Stanzi, but they still managed wind up 11-2 after knock- ing off Georgia Tech in the Orange Bowl. Last year, with a lot of people returning, the Hawks got a high Nevcspapers know better than anyone who is making news and who you need to get to know, That's why 72% of Iowans say newspapers provide critical information for everyday life. The sea- son was partially salvaged with the bowl win over MissourL Now this year nobody has Iowa anywhere near the Top 25. Of course, the magazines all came out before the final shake- down at Ohio State. How the change in coaches and the departure of Pryor will affect the Buckeyes no- body yet knows. I'm sure they will be near the top, but whether or not they win it all will have to be seen later. Wisconsin and Penn State will be challengers to the Buckeye throne room. The preseason boys have pretty much given the other di- vision title to Nebraska by default. I read someplace about the antici- pation of the Iowa-Nebraska game in November. It mentioned that Iowa had not won in Lincoln since 1943. It didn't also mention the fact that the Hawks have only played in Lincoln four times since then, 1945, 1980, 1982, and 2000. Now, playing out there every other year for the next 100 years or so might see a legitimate long Iowa losing streak, but it might not reach almost 70 years. There was an interesting article in the Press-Citizen about Shaun Prater. The lad from Omaha says he was never contacted by Bill Cal- lahan, the Nebraska coach who re- placed Frank Solich. So, he came to Iowa. Now he says he has taken a lot of guff from acquaintances in Omaha since Nebraska came into the Big Ten. Larry Station went through a lot of the same types of things 30 years ago when he chose Iowa over Nebraska. Of course, Nebraska did want him. It reached the point where his folks had to get an unlisted home phone number to keep from getting nasty phone calls. The national boys, who see the Huskers only once in awhile, keep talking about the great sports- the minority. The reason they cheer the visiting team when it leaves the field is because Nebraska almost always wins its home games. On the rare occasions the Huskers lose there is no applause. I don't recall ever seeing them cheer Oklahoma. Mostly they just griped that they had to fire Osborne and get some- body who could win the Big One. I've even seen the Huskers booed by their own fans when they left the field. That happened in 1981 when Iowa beat Nebraska, 10-7, in Iowa City. When the Huskers had beaten Iowa in 1979 and 1980 1 got a lot of razzing from people in Nebraska. In fact, up until 1981, most of the conversations I had with Husker fans about Iowa athletics consisted in me trying to answer the ques- tion, "Do they play football at Iowa?" I would start to answer by saying, "Not very well right now, but they have good basketball, wrestling,..." By the time I got that far I was get- ting interrupted by "Who cares about that junk? Those don't count." I trmally just gave up trying to con- vince them that there was some- thing besides football. I have noth- ing against football. It's my favorite sport, but I like a lot of others, too. I've always told people I'd cheer for Iowa in a Tiddley-Winks match. That might be a little extreme and I certainly don't get to all the vol- leybaU games, swimming meets, etc., but I look for the results in the paper. Just keep in mind, September 3 is approaching. In the meantime I'm going to start getting into practice. Go Hawks!!!! Lone Tree Lightning...
