Lone Tree high school volleyball #ayer Chris Less has recently been select l to participate as a member of a USA Junior Nstional Team slated to participate in the USA Junior Olympic Champion- ships in Fort Collins, Colorado this July. She will be a member of a ten-girl team representing the United States Volleyball Associa- tion Region in the state. The "selection process began sevend months ago as some twenty five teams were convened through open tryouts in twelve USA Junior throughout the states of Mi ouri, Kansas, Iowa, and Nebraska. These tryot~ at- tracted several hundred of the better high school athletes. Two hundred plus girls accepted invi- tations to participate at the site level in practices and competition since early January. Players for the summer tour were in turn selected from the site level teams. The girls will report to Simpson College in Iowa for training beginning on June II, 1988. Chosen as Distinguished Teacher The Commission of Presidential Scholars has chosen 139 high schoot seniors as the 1988 Presi- dential Scholars. The winners were selected on the basis of academic achievements, leAder- ship qualities, character and ideals. The 139 winners were chosen fzom a field of 1,500 seniors who scored high on the Scholastic Aptitude Test or the American College Test and who had top grades and extcacumculars. Each year, the Commission on Presidential Scholars request the candidates to name the teacher, at any grade level, who most influ- enced their overall academic achievement. G. Yoder, Iowa High School, Marengo, is a 1988 Presidential Scholar. She named Thomas Mossman as the teacher who had most influenced her academically. The teachers named are by the Commimion as "Distinguished Teachers". National Recognition Week for 1988 will be held June 13 - 17 in Washington, D.C. The 139 "Dis- tinguished Teachers" are invited to Washington June 13 - 15. The) are invited to a luncheon in theb honor at the Washington Pres~ Club on June 14.
