well on the JV squad and will be
seeing more at-bats for the varsi
The underclassmen making an
impact on varsity include Maken-
zie •Reynolds, a freshmah who
starts at first base for the Lions.
Sophomore Madelyn Flemr xho
plays shortstop hnd is a returning
Third-team All-State player.
In the left field, sophomore Kar-
ley Hester platoons with Woodi-
wiss and is the leadoff hitter for
the team.
"She's doing a real good job with
a .500 on base percentage that's
what you want from a lead-off hit-
ter," said Coach Dickey.
Freshman Carson Gibson was a
sprinter on the 4xl state qualifying
team and can play a lot of positions
as well as pinch hit and run,
There's a pair of eighth graders
on the varisty roster right now too:
Micaela Selck has a bat on the left
side and gets down the line fast, and
pitcher Morgyn Edwards, Avery's
younger sister, is on the bench as a
reserve pitcher.
Coach Dickey said he took only
two pitchers with him to the tour-
nament at Williamsburg .earlier
this season and regretted not hav-
ing a third.
"We needed that third one," said
Dickey. "So having Morgyn is really
important. She'll keep us in games
and won't overpower anyone as
an eighth grade, but she'll be real
important when we play so many
games in a row."
Goals for the
team:
Besides getting to the State
Tournament, a pererhial goal
for all our area softball teams,
Dickey said there's some
basic things he's working on.
"We have set up what we call a goal
pyramid," said Coach Dickey. "We
wanted to go undefeated at a tour-
nament and I don't think we've
done that for the past four years.
And we think we're in contention
for a onference title. We think we
are right there with everyoneelse."
Dickey points to his only confer-
ence loss so far to IMS and says his
team should be able to compete
with anyone.
"I think we can compete With
anyone in the conference," said
Dickey. "But they think they can
compete with us,to0 so we have to
bring a little extra. I think we play
a little better in conference than out
of conference."
Playing better in-conference than
out is a concern for Dickey.
"My biggest goal as a coach to
get us to compete Weft every night.
We're trying to get mentally tough-
er. Lifting weights more and prac-
ticing more. We just want the kids
to respond because they're not used
to that yet, but hopefully though
the middle of the season they'll re-
spond and tighten up to the expecta-
tions and we can get on a roll."
Dickey said his team's stren
are their defense and pitching
"We don't imlly have a weak spot
in the lineup, especially defensive-
lY," said Dickey. "I think every line-
up has a couple of bats that aren't
as good as you'd like them to be but
it's pitching and defense that wins
games for you."
Add some more runs to the score-
beard and the Lions will be cruising
on their way to a good post-season
run in the 1A bracket this season.
The Lady Lions are 4-8 so far
this season with wins over Louisa.
Muscatine, Highland, Wapello and
Waco, and their only SEISC loss to
IMS.
Lone Tree's Harry Miller gets the ball as the IMS runner dives
back to the plate during action earlier this season.

kids."

job beltind the plate and he's still
learning on the job," said Barnes.
"He does a good job managing the
pitchers and keeping the ball in
front and making sure everyone
is where they're supposed to be.
He's doing those things that we
hadn't expected of him yet ag a
Sophomore."
Batting:
The Lions are powerful at the
top of their order, but will be
looking for some more produion
from the rest of their lineup.
"One through three is where
we do a lot of our damage," said
Barnes. "Andy Dodson gets on
base a lot, maybe not hitting
with power and he'll get one or
two bases here and there. Jor-
dan Quigley is second and a real
strong kid, does a good job hitting
the ball the other way. Harry Mill-
er is our #3 hitter and lie's really
our big bat in the lineup, one of
the few kids we've got who can re.
ally hit a home run at any at bat."
Coach Barnes said with the new
BBCore bat regulations, the home
runs won't come as often for his
team.
"With the new bats we're not
expecting a lot of home runs, but
ff we keep putting good swings on
the ball good things are going to
happen," said Barnes.
"We're going to have to do some
iifferent things, play soe more
small ball, but our kids are good
at that and we've got a lot of speed
so getting bunts down, hR and run
and steal bases is a big part of our
offensive plan, so the bats really
don't effect us that much."
The basic goals for his team this
season are to be in contention ibr
a SEISC title.
"Honestly right now the way
things set in our conference,
there's no true front runner, so
that's our first goal," said Barnes.
"To see if we can't put ourselves
in a position to win a title and
then get a long run into the play-
offs."
Coaching with Barnes is his
brother Curt who has been with
him and the Lions' baseball squad
for the past four seasons.
