will be represented by their ll0m
hurdler Drew Sides who qualified
with his time of 16.07, finishing
third at the State Qualifier but
good enough for a fifteenth place
seeding in the 1A competition at
State. That event is scheduled to
be held at 3:20 p.m. when Class 1A
events start on Friday afternoon.
The Lone Tree boys' 4x200m
relay squad is ranked fourth
headed into the Class 1A State
Meet. Runners Jared Hudson,
Nick Viner, Ty Schillerstrom and
Travis Gillham ran to a second
place finish in their district but
ran one of the better times in the
State headed into the meet. That
race is scheduled to be held at 4:00
p.m. on Friday, and is a final.
The L-T boys' distance medley
relay squad featuring Jared Hud-
son, Nick Viner, Travis Gillham
and Jake Viner will be competing
at 5:40 p.m. The Lions are ranked
fifth in that event with their fast
time of 3:45.49.
"It's been a lot of fun," said
Lone Tree's Jake Viner, anchor of
the Distance Medley relay squad.
"We ran this team once last year
and we won that meet with it.
We've been waiting for this all
year, ready for it. We knew we
could make it."
"We stayed right behind
Pekin, we knew we had to beat
them to go, and passed them
at the end, now we're going."
The Lone Tree boys edged the
Panthers by a fraction of a sec-
ond in an exciting finish, as Viner
brought them to first place in
3:45.49, ahead of Pekin's second-
place time of 3:45.66.
The fast L-T 4xl00m relay team
featuring Jared Hudson, Nick
Viner, Ty Schillerstrom and Jo-
vonte Squiers were first in their
District with a time of 44.66,
which ranks them first overall
coming into the 1A State Meet in
Des Moines. The 4xl preliminary
race is scheduled to be held at 6:40
p.m.
The 4xl squad had missed first
place by a narrow margin at Pekin
the week before, but took first
place ahead of the Panthers at the
State Qualifier.
"We've really worked on hand-
offs, especially the last couple
days," said Nick Viner of his
team's winning performance. "We
really fine tuned things. I think
that's what really helped - doing
the little things really helps us.
That's what got us the win today"
Competing on Saturday for the
Lone Tree boys, distance run-
ner Ross Swinton earned a berth
with his time of 4:45.67 which was
a fifth place at the State Quali-
fier, but earns him a twelfth place
seeding out of 14 qualifiers in
the event. Swinton will run on
the Blue Oval at Drake Stadium
in Des Moines on Saturday after-
noon at 1:45.
The L-T boys are scheduled
to compete in the final event of
the State Track & Field meet on
Friday evening, a 4x400m relay
team featuring Nick Viner, Travis
Gillham, Ty Schillerstrom and
Jovonte Squiers was second at
their State Qualifier and is ranked
twenty-second out of 24 teams
scheduled to compete in the event.
Jovonte Squiers said his team's
4x4 team has some time to work
on their race to improve their per-
formance again.
"We've all been dropping our
times, we've got the handoffs
down a lot better than we did ear-
lier in the season," said Squiers.
"We've got a week to prepare for
state, so we'll be ready"

Eggs, Poultry are Safe...

Shaw said the Food and Drug
Administration maintains that
properly cooked poultry and eggs
pose no threat. She advised that
consumers always should follow
the FDA's procedures for safe
handling and cooking of poultry
products:
- Wash hands with warm water
and soap for at least 20 seconds be-
fore and after handling raw poul-
try and eggs.
- Clean cutting boards and other
utensils with soap and hot water
to keep raw poultry or eggs from
contaminating other foods.
- Cutting boards may be sani-
tized by using a solution of 1
tablespoon chlorine bleach and 1
gallon of water.
- Cook poultry to an internal
temperature of at least 170°F.
Consumers can cook poultry to a
higher temperature for personal
preference.
- Cook eggs until the yolks and
whites are firm. Casseroles and
other dishes containing eggs
should be cooked to 170°F.
- Use pasteurized eggs or egg
products for recipes that are
served using raw or undercooked
eggs. Some examples of these
kinds of dishes are Caesar salad
dressing and homemade ice
cream. Commercial mayonnaise,
dressing and sauces contain pas-
teurized eggs that are safe to eat.
Pasteurized eggs and egg prod-
ucts are available from a grow-
ing number of retailers and are
clearly labeled.

70 team points at their State Qual-
ifier at Waco, earning fourth place
finish out of 12 teams at the event.
Standout sprinter Paige Doeh-
rmann will be running in the
400m dash. She's been dueling
with local rival Kelsey Hora of
Highland throughout the season
and she and Hora are rated tenth
and eleventh with their times of
1:02.11 and 1:02.29 headed into the
400m event. That race is a final
and is scheduled to run on Thurs-
day evening, at 7:00 p.m. at Drake

The Lone Tree girls' fast 4xl00m
relay team, featuring Madison
Forbes, Elena Sieverding, Natie

for a berth with their time of 53.96
ranking them twenty-first out of
24 1A qualifiers in that event. The

The Lone Tree girls' sprint med-
ley relay team, featuring Forbes,
Attig, Sieverding and Doehrmann,
was first place at their State quali-

currently ranked sixteenth head-
ed into the State meet. The Sprint
Medley is scheduled to be held on
Saturday morning, May 23, at 9:00
a.m.
Shot putter Makenzie Reynolds
is also a State qualifier for her
team. Reynolds had a great throw
of 33'6" to finish third at the Waco
State Qualifier, but good enough
for a twenty-fourth place berth to
the 1A State Tournament. She'll
have a chance to see some of the
best in the State in the shot put
event on Tuesday evening, May
21, at 2:00 p.m.

teachers we met throughout the
District through serving as foster
parents. So we saw a little bit of
things everywhere, and a LOT at
Hoover, SEJH, and City High.
Not EVERY teacher was excel-
lent - over the years, there were
probably 2-3 people who needed to
leave the profession. But oh, the
other 98%! You were smart, pa-
tient, kind, firm, fair, hard work-
ing, and you really, truly cared for
my kids.
ICCSD Issues
I have been pretty involved in
ICCSD issues over the years. And
I'll be honest- I am growing tired.
The political machinations in this
District are wearing me out.
So, a final plea - as I depart my
role as ICCSD parent and become
just an ICCSD taxpayer:
Let the poor families win a few.
It is just that simple. Let the poor
families win a few. Just once, in-
convenience the wealthy families.
Look at the data, and see what
helps poor kids the most. Then do
that. Just a couple times.
It may not be the easiest thing
to do, but it is the right thing. You
WILL get criticized. So what? You
get criticized now. Let the poor
families win a few.

academic excellence among high
school students by honoring stu-
dents who serve as role models in
their communities.
May is the Month
of the Poppy
During the month of May
American Legion Auxiliary mem-
bers, with the help of volunteers,
will be distributing Veteran made
handcrafted Memorial poppies in
exchange for a free will contribu-
tion.
Poppies are made by disabled
Veterans (men and women). The
red crepe paper and other mate-
rial for the poppies is furnished
by the American Legion Auxiliary
Department in the state where the
Veteran hospital is located.
Lone Tree's poppies are made
in Marshalltown. The mental and
physical activity of making pop-
pies provides therapeutic benefits
for these Veterans.
The poppy helps to remind
Americans of the price of war
and the sacrifice of millions of
lives and at the same time honor
all of America's Veterans.
