Lone Tree boys will be busy in Des Moines by Tim greff The Lone Tree Reporter The Lone Tree boys ran well at the State Qualifier at Waco on Thursday evening May 14, finishing second out of 12 teams with 109 team points and quali- fying for eight events. The boys' team is poised to perform well as a team at State with individuals qualifying in the long jump, 1600m run and ll0m hurdles, and a strong crew of relays including the 4x2, 4xl, 4x4, Distance Medley and Shut- tle Hurdle relays. "I think having races so close last week really left us feeling pretty hungry," said Coach Phil Kenney of his boys' team's effort at the State Qualifying event. "I think our guys really came out and performed great tonight. All our times were better and we just flat out were competing. We were competing in every race. We ran season best times, and if you're going to run some season best times, the Sate Qualifying meet is the time to do it." Competing first for the Lions at the State Track & Field meet in Des Moines on May 21, is the team's Shuttle Hurdle relay. The team which features Drew Sides, Michael Schmidt, Caleb Christian and Jovonte Squiers is ranked 10th out of 24 qualifiers with their time of 1:01.90. The Shuttle Hurdle event at State will begin at 2:40 p.m. on Thurs. day with a preliminary race set- ting up for the finals to be run on Saturday. Also competing on Thursday afternoon, long jumpers Jovonte Squiers and Jared Hudson will test their skill after finishing first and third at the State Quali- fier. Squiers' leap of 21'8.25" will seed him second headed into the 1A competition and teammate Jared Hudson's leap of 19'11.25" is good enough for a eighteenth place seeding out of 24 competi- tors in the event. The Lady Lions had the sixteenth fast- est time among the state qualifyers and they are scheduled to compete in Des Moines on Saturday morning. I Wehmeyer recognized by Governor Branstad for academic excellence Julie Wehmeyer, a student at Lone Tree, was recognized by Governor Terry Branstad for out- standing academic achievement at the Thirtieth Annual Gover- nor's Scholar Recognition Cer- emony April 26 at Hy-Vee Hall in Des Moines. The statewide program, spon- sored by the Iowa Governor's Of- rice, Iowa High School Athletic Association (IHSAA) and its title sponsor the Iowa Farm Bureau Federation (IFBF), honored 436 high school seniors from across Iowa. "Iowa Farm Bureau members believe that by investing in our youth and communities, we're investing in the future of Iowa," said IFBF President Craig Hill. "We are so proud to honor such exceptional students and proud to be a leading contributor to educa- tion programs and annual schol- arships for our youth." The flags will be taken down on Mon- day, May at 4:00 p.m. and com- munity volunteers are invited to help /vith this project. T h/e Lone Tree American Le- gion Firing Squad will be travel- ing to several area cemeteries on Memorial Day, May 25 to honor deceased veterans of all our Na- tion's wars. The squad is request- ed to be at the Legion at 6:45 a.m. on Monday. Swank Cemetery is scheduled for 7:15 a.m., followed by the River Junction Cemetery at 8:00 a.m. The Firing Squad will travel to the Iowa River Bridge area at Hills for an 8:30 a.m. service to honor Navy veterans. The next stop will be at the Nichols Cemetery located east of Nichols at 9:15 a.m. followed by a service at the Catholic Cemetery west of Nichols at 9:45 a.m. The Firing Squad will return to Lone Tree for the annual Memori. al Day Service at the All Veteran's Memorial at 10:30 a.m. The ser- vice at Lone Tree will be held rain or shine. "Consumers should feel safe to eat properly cooked and prepared meat and eggs from poultry," said Angela Shaw, assistant professor in food science and human nutri- tion and extension specialist in food safety. Last week avian influenza was reported for the first time in Iowa at a turkey barn in Buena Vista County. This week, the disease was discovered in a commercial chicken flock in Osceola County. 'vian influenza is not a food- borne pathogen," said Shaw. "It cannot be contracted from eating properly cooked poultry meat and eggs." The disease is caused by an in- fluenza virus that can infect poul- try, such as chickens, turkeys, domestic ducks and geese, and is carried by migratory birds such as ducks, geese and shorebirds. Humans can be infected with the virus, but most cases involve very close direct contact with sick birds. Continued ... on page 3
