The Lone Tree boys ran well
at the State Qualifier at Waco
on Thursday evening May 14,
finishing second out of 12 teams
with 109 team points and quali-
fying for eight events.
The boys' team is poised to
perform well as a team at State
with individuals qualifying in
the long jump, 1600m run and
ll0m hurdles, and a strong crew
of relays including the 4x2, 4xl,
4x4, Distance Medley and Shut-
tle Hurdle relays.
"I think having races so close
last week really left us feeling
pretty hungry," said Coach Phil
Kenney of his boys' team's effort
at the State Qualifying event. "I
think our guys really came out
and performed great tonight.
All our times were better and we
just flat out were competing. We
were competing in every race.
We ran season best times, and if
you're going to run some season
best times, the Sate Qualifying
meet is the time to do it."
Competing first for the Lions
at the State Track & Field meet
in Des Moines on May 21, is
the team's Shuttle Hurdle relay.
The team which features Drew
Sides, Michael Schmidt, Caleb
Christian and Jovonte Squiers is
ranked 10th out of 24 qualifiers
with their time of 1:01.90. The
Shuttle Hurdle event at State
will begin at 2:40 p.m. on Thurs.
day with a preliminary race set-
ting up for the finals to be run on
Saturday.
Also competing on Thursday
afternoon, long jumpers Jovonte
Squiers and Jared Hudson will
test their skill after finishing
first and third at the State Quali-
fier. Squiers' leap of 21'8.25" will
seed him second headed into the
1A competition and teammate
Jared Hudson's leap of 19'11.25"
is good enough for a eighteenth
place seeding out of 24 competi-
tors in the event.

Eggs and Poul-
try Safe to Eat
Iowa State
University Food
Safety Specialist
Explains
AMES, Iowa -- Avian influenza
does not impact the foods that
consumers eat, says an Iowa State
University food safety expert.
"Consumers should feel safe to
eat properly cooked and prepared
meat and eggs from poultry," said
Angela Shaw, assistant professor
in food science and human nutri-
tion and extension specialist in
food safety.
Last week avian influenza was
reported for the first time in Iowa
at a turkey barn in Buena Vista
County. This week, the disease
was discovered in a commercial
chicken flock in Osceola County.
'vian influenza is not a food-
borne pathogen," said Shaw. "It
cannot be contracted from eating
properly cooked poultry meat and
eggs."
The disease is caused by an in-
fluenza virus that can infect poul-
try, such as chickens, turkeys,
domestic ducks and geese, and is
carried by migratory birds such
as ducks, geese and shorebirds.
Humans can be infected with the
virus, but most cases involve very
close direct contact with sick
birds.
