was pleased with the awarding
of a gaming license to River-
side Casino & Golf Resort
because it means good jobs for
Washington County Residents.
He related that because of plant
closings in Washington, many
Washington residents are trav-
eling to Iowa City and beyond
for jobs.
"This means that Washing-
ton residents will have an
opportunity to travel less dis-
tance for good jobs," said
Brown. "Plus it means more tax
dollars for the county and
money to be shared by cities
and non-profit groups," he
added.
"This is good for all of Wash-
ington County as well as the
City of Riverside," commented
Tim Putney, president of Wash-
ington County Riverboat Casi-
no Foundation.
Because the casino will be 50
percent owned by local
investors, many parties think it
will be an asset to Washington
County.
Dan Kehl, CEO of Kehl man-
agement, said the building of
the Riverside Casino would be
put on a fast track. The applica-
tion stipulated the casino
would be open within 20 to 24
months, but plans are to try to
speed up the construction time.
Representatives of Catfish
Bend met with the rural water
association in Ottumwa last
Wednesday, ready to make
plans for hooking up to rural
water service.
"We hope to start construc-
tion as soon as July or August,"
Kehl said. "We want to get the
casino (and related facilities)
open as soon as possible,"
stressed Joe Massa, Catfish
Bnd general manager. "We are
going to do all we can to make it
happen as soon as possible."
"We are really looking for-
ward to the opening, as this is a
great location and great place
to be," Massa added. "That is
why it got approved."
We are looking forward to
becoming involved in Riverside
and Washington County and we
are very thankful for the posi-
tive support that the people
here gave us," he said.
Riverside Mayor Bill Poch
said he was excited about the
Riverside Casino getting a gam-
bling license and he is looking
forward to working with the
City Council in planning how

Poch said he would like to see
some of the funds used for
property tax relief. He said he
would like to see a recreation
center that would be combined
with new city offices and possi-
bly a new fire station. He added
he would like to see something
done to renovate the Riverside
business district, getting build-
ing owners to improve their
buildings and get other busi-
nesses to open in Riverside.
Poch said he would like to
work with Kalona and other
towns to promote tourism in
the county and maybe establish
a museum that would feature
Star Trek and Captain Kirk
items and maybe a libra,.
The Riverside Mayor added
that he would like to reach out
to those who opposed the casi-
no.
Poch said he realized it would
be a couple years before any
money is realized, but the coun-
cil needs to start planning. He
suggested that the city hold a
series of town meetings to get a
feel for what the citizens of
Riverside want.
Poch said he also feels that
Kalona could benefit from the
casino with the increase in
tourism.
The Riverside Area Commu-
nity Club, Poch feels, would
play a large roll in the plans for
future development of down-
town Riverside, as that group is
the community's main service
club.
The supporters of the River-
side Casino held a victory party
at Murphy's Bar & Grill last
Wednesday evening as they cel-
ebrated the Iowa Racing and
Gaming Commission awarding
a license to four communities
including Riverside.
