EARTH
TALK00
Questions & Answers
About Our Environment
Dear EarthTalk: How can I
recycle my outdated comput-
er equipment?
--Kenneth Rapp, Toms River,
NJ
Computers are infamous for
their rapid obsolescence. These
days you can expect a new com-
puter to serve you for three to
five years at best before "must
have" features become avail-
able only in newer models.
Many companies have "com-
puter graveyards"--rooms filled
to the ceiling with outdated
computers, printers, monitors,
cables and other accessories
that are no longer in operation
and seemingly have nowhere to
go but the junk heap.
It's no surprise then that
more than 10 million comput-
ers end up in American land-
fills every year. But old comput-
er equipment languishing in
landfills poses myriad environ-
mental hazards, as many con-
tain toxic compounds that can
seep into surrounding land and
groundwater. According to
USA Today, the average PC con-
tains "five pounds of lead (to

line," Harkin said. "I strongly
urge the House Energy and
Commerce Committee to adopt
an aggressive renewable ener-
gy package in the energy legis-
lation before them today. And
they should begin with an
ambitious Renewable Fuels
Standard (RFS) that puts the
focus on domestic renewable
resources and away from for-
eign sources of oil."
Last month, Harkin led a
bipartisan effort in the Senate
to introduce a RFS that would
raise the amount of renewable
fuels used in this country to at
least eight billion gallons annu-
ally by 2012. This RFS is three
billion gallons a year higher
than last year's bill and more
than two billion gallons a year
higher than legislation passed
by the Senate Energy and Pub-
lic Works Committee earlier
this year.
"By turning our focus to
home grown, renewable
sources of energy, we reduce
the cost for energy consumers
and provide a spark to rural
economies," Harkin Said.
"Specifically, an ambitious RFS
like the one we proposed in the
Senate would lower the cost of
gasoline for drivers, raise the
price of commodities grown in
our fields, and wean the U.S. off
of our dependence on expen-
sive foreign oil."
Harkin continued, "We have
to get serious about changing
the way we think about energy
production. There is only so
much oil and other fossil fuels
on the planet. We must start
turning to cleaner, renewable
sources of energy, like ethanol
and wind power, and we must
do it now."
Harkin has been a leader in
the push toward a renewable
energy future. In addition to
sponsoring ambitious RFS leg-
islation, Harkin has also
worked to increase the produc-
tion of electricity through
wind power and develop a
hydrogen economy. He has also
been active in establishing
markets for biobased products,
such as plastics and lubricants,
that can replace traditional
petroleum-based products and
lessen our need for oil and
other fossil fuels.

A Question
Letter to the Editor;
I would like to clear things up, even
though it might be too late for the
rumor mill. In last week's edition of
the Reporter, I (Durk Sterner) was
identified as the father to Alex
Ogren. Now the last time I checked,
he is not my son. Even though we are
related, (but then again, isn't every-
body in a small town?) and you see us
together at times, past and present,
hunting, golfing, fishing, family
reunions,T-ball games, playing catch in
the back yard, he has dark hair, drives
a Dodge, is a dead eye with a shot-
gun.Anyway, you see, I'm just not his
father.
I can see where people can be con-
fused. A few years ago, I believe Rick
Ogren, (aka. Durk Sterner) won
some talent show at the Fall Festival.
Maybe that got the myth started. Or
maybe its because me and Rick
Ogren, both ride bicycle's. You see,
I'm always the one that"stops' at the
stop signs. Rick is also pretty quiet at
social gatherings, as well as am.You
of Paternity
can always find the both of us, stand-
ing in a corner, not drawing any atten-
tion. Both of us, are very shy individ-
uals, and for us to be identified in the
local paper, may lead us to crawl back
in our shells a little more.
So, I hope I have cleared this little
matter up.
By the way, Happy Belated Birthday
Dad! ( I mean Carl )
