Grant could pay for new water tower
By Jolene Vance
News Editor
The Lone Tree City Council is
applying for a grant to pay for a
new water tower.
Tracey Mulcahey of East
Central Iowa Council of
Governments (ECICOG) attended
the May 6 meeting to answer
questions pertaining to the grant.
Grants are due in August. A confi-
dential survey will be conducted
in the community and will be pub-
licized in the local paper. Further
discussion was tabled for a work
session.
Keith and Velma Mills were
visitors at the council meeting to
discuss ongoing water problems
at their property. City staff are
looking into it and looking for
solutions to correct the drainage
problems. Tree removal is being
considered and this was tabled to
a work session in order to obtain
additional information.
A certified letter will soon be
sent to property owners involved
with the Commercial Street side-
walks. Those sidewalks not meet-
ing city standards will need to be
under repair by July 1, or a
planned date by a hired contractor
must be scheduled. Property own-
ers can send a letter from their
contractor that the work is sched-
uled to be done.
The city will purchase and pro-
vide railings for the sidewalk,
however, property owners must
install and maintain the railings
thereafter.
A new city ordinance regard-
ing curfew has been printed and
sent to everyone in the communi-
ty. The most recent school news
published the ordinance in its
entirety.
City council members congrat-
ulated Steve Flake, utilities direc-
tor, who has been appointed as the
new fire chief in Lone Tree.
The city attorney indicated the
contract for trash pickup ends on
June 30 and will need renewal.
Also, The Little Engine Pre-
School lease is up in 2002. The
city will need to renew or reneg0-
tiate the lease.
There was discussion regard-
ing the ABC Park pavilion. It
needs roofing and work on the
cement floor. Three bids have
been received with Yakish's bid
being the lowest. The council rec-
ommended accepting that bid.
Council members questioned
going with steel, which is more
expensive, and wondered why not
reshingle. This was tabled .to a
work session to obtain bids for
shingles.
The council accepted and
approved bids received from
Mincer Ford in Columbus
Junction for the F350 Ford in the
amount of $13,200, and Cortez
Equipment bid for the truck bed in
the amount of $6,673.
Street projects were covered
and city staff will begin work on
12 alleys this year at a cost of
approximately $9,000. The
remaining alleys in need of
repairs and work will be done
next year. The city will spend
$3,000 per year for alleys overall.
The council has budgeted $18,000
this fiscal year for street projects
and repairs. The remaining $9,000
this year will go to streets that
need repairs the most.
Greenleaf, city attorney, made
a few changes to the fire agree-
ment under discussion. The
changes identified the fire associ-
ation members and entity itself.
Budgeting/operating expenses
were approved for 2002-2003.
The council will then send on to
the Fire Association for their
approval.
Performance reviews for city
employees were discussed. Mayor
Joanne Havel will create a sum-
mary statement for council mem-
bers to look at with respect to rais-
es. A board of three council mem-
bers will do the reviews. Council
members will determine a raise
percentage at a future work ses-
sion to be approved by June.
Steven Whitmore has request-
ed approval to complete a
National Honor Society commu-
nity project at Dougherty Park. He
will weed and mulch the park and
get the mulch from the cemetery.
The council approved the project.
Baccalaureate set for May 22
TheBaccalaureate Service for
the Class of 2002 will be held on
Wednesday, May 22, beginning at
7 p.m. in the New Gym. This
Baccalaureate service marks the
eighth year that the United
Presbyterian Church and St.
Mary's Catholic Church have
sponsored the ecumenical event
for the graduating seniors, their
families, and the community. In
the first years of Baccalaureate's
return, the service was held in the
churches until the Class of 1999's
seniors requested and received per-
mission to hold the service at the
school. Each year's committee
since has affirmed this decision.
Each year a committee of grad-
uating seniors work with Ann
Rouse and Carol Kaalberg to put
together the short service. This
year's committee includes Melanie
Hotka, Monica Loan, Andrew
Meyer, Ashlee Ogren, Ann Sladek,
and Mandi VanderLinden.
This year's speaker will be Rev.
Bill" Skinner. Rev. Skinner is a
retired Presbyterian minister from
Sioux City, but more importantly
to this occasion he is the graduat-
ing senior Ann Sladek's grandfa-
ther. Last year the Class of 2001
added a Student Response and this
year's committee agreed to contin-
ue the tradition. This year's speak-
er will be Mandi VanderLinden.

Thank your school board members
By Jolene Vance

School Board Recognition
Week is a time to recognize the
volunteers who offer their time and
talents to their school and commu-
nity.
The Iowa Association of School
Boards has designated May 12-18
as an opportunity for the public to
thank their school board members
for their dedication and time spent
in pursuing the best educational
opportunities possible for the stu-
dents in their community.
This year's theme - "Reaching
High: Raising the Bar" -recog-
nizes that school board members
are community leaders striving for
higher levels of success for stu-
dents.
The school board members of
Lone Tree have expressed why
they are school board members:
"Being on the board of educa-
tion means you are one part of a
body. We are charged primarily
with being advocates for education
and ensuring that we are financial-
ly sound. The latter part can be the
most challenging. I try to keep in
mind a quote I once heard, 'If you
think education is expensive, try
ignorance.'
I wanted to help the communi-
ty. When I started we had issues
with maintenance," said Jim
