The Lone Tree Reporter, May 8,
Micah Reeves leads junior high Lions to win,
Lone Tree boys and girls sweep first home meet
by Bryon Houlgrave
Of the five events in which
Micah Reeves participated in, the
number of times he placed second
or lower was zero. Reeves swept
his line-up of events and did so in
fashion, blowing the doors off the
competition in the 100-meter dash
and scoring a time that is compa-
rable to many sprinters on the
high school level.
The junior high track teams
were finally able to take their first
steps on the new surface as com-
petitors last Monday, April 28th,
at their home opener, and the result
was a sweep. The boys, guided by
head coach Jay Gorsh, took the
lead early and never looked back,
unless it was to see how far
behind them the nearest runner
was. After second and third place
finishes in the long-jump, the
Lions placed first in their next
four events, cinching the lead and
simply running away with it.
Aside from Reeves impres-
sive showcase of speed, distance
also played a factor in the Lion s
win. Derek Havel finished first in
the mile, an event in which he
entered with slight reservation.
But all reservations were put away
on the straight-away, as he casual-
ly glanced behind him to see no
one there and cruised across the
finish line nearly a minute ahead
of his closest competitor. Dallas
Petersen took first place in the
200-meter hurdle, as well as lead-
ing his team to a first place victo-
ry in the shuttle hurdle relay, and
that was something, Gorsh says,
that gave the team a huge boost.
We had some great individual
efforts from Havel and Petersen,
said Gorsh.
Gorsh commented after the
meet that it was a good win for the
team. They had expected a very
tough showdown with WACO,
who had done extremely well at
the Wapello tournament, putting
up a first place finish at the 7th
grade level and a third on the 8th
grade side. We knew that a com-
bined team was going to present a
challenge.
With a time of 12.41 in the
100- meter dash, coach Gorsh
feels that Micah could walk into
the high school level and be ready
to compete.
Micah s got a lot of speed,
and I m sure he could run with the
high school guys, Gorsh com-
mented. I think he d be great in
many events.
Gorsh notes that Reeves sue-

cess on the track lies deeper than
his talents alone. He attributes his
tremendous work efforts and
strenuous off-season training
regime as keys to his success on
the track. He does a lot of things
during the off season-extra work-
outs that help him develop his
speed-rather than just rely on his
natural speed, which he certainly
has. You can t post those times
and not have some natural ability
helping you, but at the same time
[Micah] takes his natural ability
and develops it with extra activi-
ties that will help to increase his
speed.
The girls were off and running
too, and behind the times of Ellie
Neuzil and Hannah Loan the Lady
Lions ran into first place, finish-
ing off the Lone Tree sweep.
I was really pleased with the
girls, said Lady Lion coach,
Rhonda Lacina. They were all
trying to better their personal
best.
Lacina said that there are 42
girls out for track this year, so
finding the talent doesnt take far
to look.
Micah Reeves sprinted a
12.41 in the 100-meter
dash-good enough,
his coach, to compete

The spring sports season is
winding down for all. The girls
conference track meet was held
this week. The boys conference
track meet will be held next
Tuesday. But, don't think you can
sit back, relax, and put your feet
up for a couple of months.
Baseball starts the last week in
May.
Well, you just .never can tell
what is going to happen in the
world of sports. The Prohibitive
Favorite finished second in the
Kentucky Derby. The Iowa soft-
ball team backed into the Big Ten
championship. Coming into the
last weekend of Big Ten action I
would have almost bet the farm
that Michigan would win the title
and I would 'get' to go to Ann
Arbor again if I wanted to attend
the Big Ten post season tourna-
ment. You notice, I said I would
have ALMOST bet the farm. I
may not be the smartest pig in the
pen, but I learned long ago that
there is no such thing as a 'sure
thing.'
Anyway, Iowa will host the
Big Ten Softball Tournament
beginning today, May 8. It is the
third time Iowa has hosted the
tournament, but the Hawks have
never won when it was in Iowa
City. It has been either Iowa or
Michigan hosting the tournament
every year it's been held, begin-
ning about 1995 or 1996. I'm glad
it is in Iowa City, though. I was
getting tired of going to Ann
Arbor. It's a nice city and
Michigan has a nice, pretty, cam-
pus, but, it's a lot easier and
cheaper to drive from home to
Iowa City each day than to Ann
Arbor.
There are six teams in the tour-
nament. Iowa is the #1 seed and
Michigan is the #2 seed. In game
one, at noon on Thursday, #3
Michigan State will play #6
Northwestern. In game two, at
2:30 on Thursday, #4 Illinois will
take on #5 Minnesota. At 5:00
p.m. Michigan will take on the
game one winner and at 7:30 p.m.
Iowa will take on the game 2 win-
ner. That is one definite advantage
that Iowa has over the Michigan
field. There are no lights there, so
the tournament always starts in
the morning.
The action starts again at noon
on Friday. The game two loser
and the game three loser meet at
noonl the games one and four los-
ers meet at 2:30, the games three
and four winners meet at 5:00 and
the games five and six winners
meet at 7:30. On Saturday, the
game eightwinner takes 'on the '
game seven loser at noon and then
the game seven winner and the
game nine winner meet at 2:30 for
the champhionship. I think that
game will be televised live by Fox
Sports Chicago. It has been for the
last several years.
Iowa managed to win the title
by finishing 1/2 game ahead of
Michigan. When Iowa lost twice
to Northwestern and then beat
Illinois in the doubleheader two
weekends ago that left Iowa with
a final conference record of 13-4.
"The Hawks had the 'bye' last
weekend. Michigan was in first
place after that weekend's action
with a record of 13-3 and two
games left with Michigan State.
All Michigan had to do would be
to win one of its last two games.
However, the Spartans were look-
ing to improve their own seeding
in the tournament, so they beat
Michigan, 2-0, on Saturday in
East Lansing and then beat them
2-1 on Sunday in Ann Arbor. That
dropped Michigan to 13-5, half a
game behind Iowa, and vaulted
Michigan State past Illinois into
third place.
So, everybody, if you are look-
ing for something to do Thursday,
Friday and Saturday, take yourself
to Pearl Field in Iowa City and
watch some softball. Iowa has
gotten the final permanent bleach-
ers added this spring atop the
dugouts and the seating capacity
is now about 1200.
I was rather surprised, that
Iowa didn't get chosen' as a SiteTOr
an NCAA Regional Tournament.
The nearest ones are in Lincoln,
Nebraska, and Ann Arbor,
Michigan. Apparently, Nebraska
has upgraded its softball facility
by quite a bit. When I was out
there the softball team was play-
ing its games on a recreational
field with not much more bleach-
er seating than Lone Tree has. The
NCAA tournament this year has
expanded from 48 to 64 teams so
each of the eight regionals will
have eight teams in a double elim-
ination tournament that will run
from May 15 - 18. The regional
site next closest to here, after
Lincoln and Ann Arbor, is Austin
Texas. Iowa will be in a regional
somewhere, no matter what the
outcome of this weekend's Big
Ten tournament is. The pairings
are going to be announced
Sunday night at 9:00 on
ESPNNews.
