Sam Schluttenhofer won Best
of Show at the South East Iowa
Art Conference. This event was an
opportunity for surrounding
schools to exhibit outstanding art-
work. The students also had the
chance to attend workshops
instructed by local artists. Thanks
to all the wonderfully creative
individuals in the Lone Tree Art
Room, this year's Conference was
a huge success.
Those students that also placed
are: Ng Kammy, Second Place in
Multimedia; Sarah Hedlund,
Honorable Mention in Drawing;
and Sarah Hedlund, Honorable
Mention in Painting. All of the art-
work exhibited in the'Art
Conference will be on display in
the library.
'Art of Motherhood'
The third and fourth graders of
Lone Tree Schools have been
learning about the technique of
painting. Von Maur has donated
four canvases and four sets of
acrylic paints for the students to
create an artwork about the 'Art of
Motherhood.' The paintings
should be done by the beginning
of May and will be displayed in
Von Maur stores throughout the
country. Keep up the good work
third and fourth graders artists.

Young Iowans Arts Council
extends deadline for applications
A new initiative being under-
taken by the Iowa Arts Council is
searching for artists in all disci-
plines who are 17 to 26 years old
and who wish to participate in
bringing about innovative ideas
regarding Iowa's cultural environ-
ment.
The application deadline for
those interested in being part of
the Young Iowans Arts Council is
Friday, April 27. For more infor-
mation on the application process,
contact Kelly Bettis at 515-281-
6787 or e-mail to:
Kelly.Bettis @ dca.state.IA.us.
The Young Iowans Arts
Council will include high school
students, college students native
to Iowa, artists, trade people, and
people already in the Iowa work-
force from all ethnic backgrounds.
An appointment to the YIAC is
not a paid position but could serve
as an excellent addition to a stu-
dent's resume as they graduate
high school or college, or to a cur-
riculum vita of someone already
in the workforce.
"We think it's very important to
continue to nurture young artists,"
said Anita Walker, Iowa Arts
Council executive director. "We
recognize the importance of this
age group. Clearly Iowa is cage,"
to keep its younger Iowans at
home. Who better to help us
,design programs for young
Iowans than young Iowans them-
selves?"
YIAC members wilt hold
youth forums around the state to
gather input and serve on or pro-
vide advice for other statewide
committees utilizing the arts that
are in need of a young person's
perspective. Each member will
commit to one year of service.
Once members are chosen, they
will participate in a one-day
Saturday retreat in May, and the
statewide cultural caucus June 8
in Des Moines as part of their
duties.

Spring Fest con't
to wear the fireman's hat.]
Adults at the festival appeared
to be reveling in the festivities as
well. Lisa O'Rourke, Curtis'
mother, said she had heard of the
festival through friends and
attended last year. They had
enjoyed it so much, they returned
for this year's celebration.
Marjorie Walker of Lone Tree,
who was enjoying just talking
with friends, said she attends the
festival each year and was here
this year with her daughter, Ruth,
who was appearing as "April
Showers."
No one seemed to relish the
event more, however, than those
who attended the festival in cos-
tume. Among those appearing
were Seydee the Clown, Gerald
the Ringmaster, Louie the Fire
Fly, the Old Country Buffet Bee,
Peter Rabbit, Uncle Sam, Old
Mother Hubbard (and her dog),
Goldie the Spring Chicken (with a
baby chick), McGruff the Crime
Dog, April Showers, Spring Fairy-
Godmother, Dorothy from the
Wizard of Oz (and Toto, too), and
Granny Bo Peep (with a lamb for
petting).
This years Spring Festival
came to a close with the presenta-
tion of a puppet show featuring
the Easter Bunny and a hungry
tiger. The children in the audience
