The Iowa softball team
missed a golden opportunity to
really take control of the Big
Ten race last weekend. The 9th
ranked Michigan Wolverines
were in town for a doublehead-
er on Sunday. Iowa and
Michigan both went into the
weekend with identical 8 - 0
conference marks. This was
Iowa's 'bye' weekend so the
Hawks only played two confer-
ence games instead of four and
those two were with Michigan.
The Wolverines had two
games at Illinois before coming
to Iowa City and got upset in
the Saturday game. So, they
brought a 9 - 1 conference
record into town.
Had the Hawkeyes managed
to win a pair it would have
almost put Iowa in the driver's
seat to the title. Iowa would
have been still unbeaten at 10 -
0, with 10 games left and all the
other conference teams would
have had at least two losses.
However, alas, victory was not
to come to the Black and Gold.
Michigan is a fine team, with
excellent hitting and really
excellent pitching. As a team
they bat almost .300 and the
pitching staff has a combined
0.69 ERA.
There were some really shin-
ing defensive gems by both
teams during the games
Sunday, but Michigan got out of
town with a pair of 3- 1 wins to
reclaim first place. At least
Gayle got her 1000th win on
Friday night when the Hawks
defeated Coe. Iowa has home
games again this weekend on
Friday night, Saturday at noon
and a doubleheader on Sunday.
Those are the last home confer-
ence games for the Hawks this
year.
Kolache Days --- sweet success
For the 23rd year, St. Mary's Catholic Church in Kalona held Kolache Days on March 26. Volunteers sold
1,188.5 dozen kolaches, approximately 10 dozen more than last year. Different types of kolaches pre-
pared were cherry, apricot, prune, and poppyseed. Nancy Phillips is pictured moving freshly baked
Kolaches to a cooling tray.
