The eighth grade lady Lions
basketball team finished their
post season play with a strong
showing at the Pacesetters State
Tournament. This particular
tournament is unique in that only
school based teams are allowed in
the tournament, however, small
schools such as Lone Tree can
be paired against teams from
the largest school districts in
the state. Nevertheless, the Lady
Lions have repeatedly shown no
fear in playing any opponent and
they did so again at Pacesetters.
Unfortunately, the Lions drew
a tough opponent in the first
round of the tournament. They
were paired with Waverly-Shell
Rock for the in'st game. That was
significant as WSR had won the
Pacesetters Tournament in 2011
and came in second to Linn-Mar
in 2012. The Lions knew they had
their work cut out for them in the
first game. In fact, they led by as
much as 4 in the early going. How-
ever, WSR eventually found their
rhythm and part way through the
first half did not seem to miss any
shot no matter how far they were
from the basket. The Lions stared
at a 17 point deficit at half-time.
The Lions came out at half-time
fighting hard as usual, but the
WSR shots kept falling and they
eventually dispatched with the
Lions 38-17.
The loss in the first round shift-
ed the Lady Lions to the consola-
tion bracket. The Lions were not
very happy about their first loss
and seemed to take it out on her
next opponent Northeast Hamil-
ton. NE Hamilton seemed to be
at a loss for how to score against
the Lions and they mustered
just 6 points in the first half to
the Lions 19. The Lions kept the
pressure on in the second half ued their stifling defense in the
and eventually routed Northeast second half and went on to win
Hamilton by a score of 35-19. 25-19, clenching the consolation
