Janet Lyness officially filed
nomination documents for re-
election for Johnson County At-
torney. Lyness was first elected
Johnson County Attorney in 2006
by 99 percent of the voters; she
was re-elected for a second term
in 2010 by 98 percent of the vot-
ers. She is seeking election as
Johnson County Attorney for her
third term.
Lyness has lived in Johnson
County since 1977. She received
her Bachelor of Science and Law
degrees from the University of
Iowa. She was licensed as an
attorney in 1989 and began her
career as an Assistant Johnson
County Attorney in 1990. She
was appointed First Assistant
County Attorney in 2005 after
extensive experience in criminal
and civil law. She is a member
of the UI Anti-Violence Coali-
tion, the Johnson County Coali-
tion Against Domestic Abuse, the
Sexual Assault Response Team,
and is President-Elect of the Iowa
County Attorney's Association.
Lyness has led the prosecution
of major felony cases and mis-
demeanors for 24 years. She has
specialized in the prosecution of
violent crimes. She supervises
a staff of 28, including 13 attor-
neys.
Also, as County Attorney, she
represents the Johnson County
Board of Supervisors and the De-
partments, Boards and Commis-
sions of the County.
Lyness says she has fulfilled
her campaign promises by cre-
ating numerous diversion pro-
grams, including the Marijuana
Diversion Program, which helps
participants get substance abuse
education and treatment with the
goal of expunging their criminal
records; the Driving Under Sus-
pension "Rocket Docket," which
helps citizens with suspended
driver's licenses get their driv-
ing privileges re-instated; and the
Jail Populations/Diversion Pro-
gram, which gets people out of
jail. She has participated in the
development of the Drug Treat-
ment Court and the Family Treat-
ment Courts for Johnson County.
"I want to expand the diversion
and treatment programs devel-
oped under my leadership. The
Oath of Office states that I will
uphold the laws and the Consti-
tution. The law must show im-
partiality, justice and fairness to
all," Lyness said. "My mission is
to represent the concerns of the
community while upholding the
law and protecting the people of
Johnson County."
During her next term, Lyness
seeks to address the lack of men-
tal health treatment within the
criminal justice system, and the
concerns of racial disparity.
Lyness has volunteered with
the Iowa City Crisis Center, the
Domestic Violence Intervention
Program, and the Rape Victim
Advocacy Program. Currently,
she works with the Iowa City
Pilot Club, the Iowa City Foreign
Relations Council, and the Free
Lunch Program. She is a licensed
foster parent.

Connection
On April 1st, the 8th grade
class took a field trip with
Mrs. Bryce to the Coralville
Library for the annual Finan-
cial Uteracy Fair put on by
Workplace Leaming Connec-
tion and volunteers through-
out surrounding areas.
At the fair, students deter-
mine the Net Monthly Pay
after taxes for their future
career, they then go around
to stations to purchase
things like a home, insur-
ance, transportation, food
for the month, utilities, etc.
Once they finished, they
met with a financial advisor
to go over their spending
habits and what changes
they might need to make.
