Page 2 Opinion/Editorial The Lone Tree Reporter, April 3, 2 Nothing terrible about these two's by Bryon Houlgrav, My wife and I recently cele- brated the anniversary of the last time we were guests of Covenant Medical Center, in Waterloo. We celebrated the event, it was a pretty big mile- stone actually, with cake, ice cream, presents, a couple of tantrums (which are only signs of whats to come in the ever- present future) which lived longer than normal-it's kind of hard to discipline a full-scale, fist-pounding, top-of-your-lung- screaming, floor-kicking protest when the protester is celebrating his second birth- day. I warned you about this a couple of months ago. My dear sweet Calvin has graduated from the world of the ones to the terrible twos, and so far he's... •..been considerably and surprising good! That entire fit scenario that I just placed before you, that was all really made up. I need- ed to set the scene, raise your attention for the moment. It's what people in the drama world call.., alright, I don't have a clue about the drama world, but I had to increase your elevation of awareness. I had to give you a visual aide to continue reading this editorial, because Calvin was, on his two-year birthday, the exact opposite of how I described him. He was very good. And he's been that way ever since. Aside from the occasional vocal uproar, and the demands for more milk, Calvin so far remains the ideal two-year-old- child. Calvin is the only one who leaps into my arms when I come home at night, the only one who gives me kisses over the phone, the only one who misses me when I'm just a room away, taking a shower. He is a constant reminder of what it is to think like a child. Everything is new. Everything is an adventure, and we learn, in our aging The Tiger Scouts toured the Reporter office last week. That a milk-mustache is not signs of a slob, but signs of creativity. Calvin is just that: creative. He's just like Michelle and I when we were that age. We say so all the time, and it is my belief that we agree on that because we not only see who we were, but we see who we want to be still, in our agoniz- ing daily world amongst bills, work, stupid people, and more stupid people. Thanks to Cal, I've recently re-learned that the Alosaurus was larger than the T-Rex, and probably ate him on a semi- regular basis. Thanks to Cal, I can throw a Nerf ball against the living room wall and have an excuse ready when Michelle • catches me pretending to be Pedro Martinez. Unless my two year old catcher slips into the kitchen for a drink of milk. Thanks to Calvin I've had another reason to believe that life is wonderful, despite the last two years and all its miser- able bearings. And yet more stupid people. I've joked in the past about warning you of Calvin's terri- ble two stage. Now, as Michelle and I weigh the decision to move into town from Coralville, I'm thinking that whatever town he lives in is going to know, relatively quick- ly, that they have someone spe- cial in their lives. All it will take is one smile. And the bat of an eyelash. Do you have a strong opinion about an issue important to your community? Write a letter to the editor. P.O.
