Lady Lion eighth grade basketball at weekend tournamem
By: Erlk Edens
The 8th grade lady Lions has-
ketball team travel to Hiawatha
on March 3 to participate in an
8th-grade girls basketball tour.
nament. The lady Lions have
been participating in numerous
weekend basketball tournaments
since finishing their school sea-
son where they crushed most
conference opponents barring
one 3 point loss down in Mediap-
olis. In the Eastern Iowa sports
complex tournament on March
3, they faced a deep and athletic
team from Pella with a number
of speedy guards. However, they
were no match for the Lady Lions
that coasted to an 11 point vic-
tory. Scoring: Elena Sieverding 8,
Madison Forbes 5, Liz Dodson 4
and Maryssa Grover 1.
They also faced off against
a team from North Butler that
featured large and talented post
players that had seemed to domi-
nate other teams in the tourna-
ment. The Lone Tree post players,
Maryssa Grover, Kaycee Kane,
and Kasey Wieland combined to
stifle North Butler's inside game,
rendering their post players al-
most ineffective, allowing the
Lions to best them by 14. Scoring:
Madison Forbes 9, Elizabeth Dod-
son 5, Elena Sieverding 4, Marys-
sa Grover 3, Kasey Wieland 2, and
Lizzie Edens 2.
The Lady Lions knew their
toughest challenge would be
against the Northeast Iowa Thun-
der, an all star/traveling team.
That team had almost twice as
many players as Lone Tree and
featured several players that
were big, many that were fast,
and they had several good out-
side shooters. The Lions knew
they would have to put forth their
very best effort and all the com-
ponents of the team would have
to function maximally in order
to beat this talented team and
that is exactly what they did. The
Lions trailed from the opening
minutes, but thanks to their sti-
fling defense, aggressive drives to
the basket and fast breaks, they
faced just a 4-point deficit at half-
time.
The Lions kept pounding away
but could never reduce the deft-
cit to less than 4 by the time the
final 2 minutes arrived. The
momentum started to shift how-
ever when Kaycee Kane drove to
the basket and got pounded by a
Thunder defender. Kaycee picked
herself up off the floor and made
the Thunder pay by sinking 2 free
throws to bring the Lions within
2, the closest margin since the be-
ginning of the game.
After a great Lion defensive
stop, Lizzie Edens drove to the
basket and drew the foul. She
made one of the 2 free throws,
cutting the deficit to just one
point with roughly 40 seconds
remaining. The Lions were then
able to tie up a Thunder ball han-
dler to regain possession of the
bali with 10.6 seconds remaining
on the clock, but 100 feet from the
basket.
Coach Pearson called a timeout
and drew up an inbounds play to
utilize screens that would hope-
fully free up one of the guards to
run the length of the court for a
layup. The play was executed to
perfection with Elizabeth Dodson
making a perfect throw to Made.

the other Lions tied up the Thun-
der defenders. In spite of pres-
sure defense and the stress of the
clock winding down, Madison
once again made the essential
shot at the crucial moment of
the game. This was the first lead
of the game for the Lady Lions!
himself as he called a time out
with 5.2 seconds remaining. For-
tunately, the Thunder timeout
strategy was no match for the
Lions defense in the remaining
5 seconds in the Lady Lions pre-
vailed to allow the sweep of the
tournament. Scoring: Kaycee
son Forbes 4, Maryssa Grover 3,
Elena Sieverding 3 and Elizabeth
Dodson 2.
This tournament play im-
proves the Lions post-season re-
cord to 8-4 with two tournaments
remaining.
