• There was a little snowstorm on
Tuesday, March 5, but that didn't
stop John Etheredge's voters.
Etheredge earned 3,142 votes out
of 6,113 total voters in a special :
Johnson County Board of Supervi- i
sors election to fill the vacancy left
by Sally Stutsman, who resigned to
serve in the Iowa House of Repre-
sentatives. With the win, Etheredge
becomes the first elected Republi,
can in Johnson County since 1964.
Etheredge noted that the weath-
er may have damped some voters,
but he was honored and humbled
to see the results of his campaign
and supporters' efforts to get out
the vote.
"I had one gentlemen tell me
he had a neighbor who said they
weren't sure they'd be able to make
it out of their drive," said Ether-
edge in an interview with The Lone
Tree Reporter. "He had a blade on
his vehicle and plowed their drives
so they could get out."
Etheredge was sworn in during a
short Monday session in Iowa City
on March II and will sit in his first
fall meeting on the beard Tuesday
evening, March 12 (after Lone Tree
Reporter publishing deadlines). A
conservative voice from rural John.
son Coun Etheredge said his vic-
tory in the election showed how his
ideas won over poliics.
"I was supported by Democrats,
Republicans, Independents and
new voters who hadn't voted be-
fore," said Etheredge. "It was awe-
some to see people come out and
vote ideas over politics. I ran on
representing the entire populous
of Johnson County and empha-
sized representation for people in
the rural community who didn't
