Freshmen Boys win in a double over
time thriller
By Mike Forbes
After leading visiting Mid-
Prairie for the better part of the
game on January 6, the Lone Tree
freshmen boys basketball team
suddenly found themselves
scrambling to hold on at the end.
Two overtimes and ten near
parental heart attacks later, the
boys ended up on top, 60-57.
Lone Tree maintained the lead
from the beginning of the game
until late in the third quarter. Mid-
Prairie went ahead 36-35 with
1:00 left in the third quarter when
Jeff Grim picked a perfect time to
score 3 of his 5 points, hitting a
three-pointer from the corner, put-
ting the Lions back on top going
into the fourth.
A seesawing fourth quarter
saw Lone Tree fall behind by five
at one point, then scratch their
way back. With 42 seconds left in
the game, Steve Cochran went 1-2
from the foul line to notch the
game up at 50. This would prove
to be the final scoring for the rest
of regulation, and we were beaded
for overtime.
Jack Larew found himself at
the charity stripe with a mere 17
ticks left on the clock in overtime,
and Lone Tree trailing 54-52.
Ever so calmly Larew sunk both
free throws, much to the delight of
the home crowd. Neither team
was able to muster another score,
and after a short conference, both
coaches decided to play a second
overtime.
Cool customer Larew once
again was fouled to start the sec-
ond overtime period, and, like
before, he sunk both free-throws.
Four consecutive points by post
Zach Ryerson gave Lone Tree a
60-54 lead. Mid-Prairie was able
to hit a three-pointer, but it was
too little too late, as the Lions held
on to win 60-57.
Rob Chamberlain and Zach
Ryerson led the Lion charge with
14 and 1l points, respectively.
Steve Cochran also managed dou-
ble figures, scoring 10 points.

Columbus.
Lone Tree defeated Columbus
77-56, to go 10-1 on the year. The
Lions are undefeated in
Superconference play, and
between the hot hands of Michael

Sladek, the Lone Tree Lions stand
a good chance of br!nging home
the conference champioriship.
Tra,is Hotz snatched 8
rebounds, followed by Robert
Sladek and Michael Hotz with 7
apiece. Both Aaron Luedtke and
Michael Forbes brought down 4.
