Volume CXXIV, Issue 03 • Thursday, January 15, 2015 The only pal)er in the world |hat CARES about Lone Tree Lone Tree Briefs Lion's Club pancake supper The Lone Tree chapter of LionsClub will hold their annual pancake and sau- sage supper on January 16, prior to the basketball games with Mediapolis, in the school cafeteria from 4 - 7 p.m. The cost of the meal will be $6.00 for adults and $4.00 for children 8 years old and under. Sugar free syrup will be available. During the sup- per the Lions Club will also be accepting donations of used eyeglasses, hearing aids and ceil phones. 5th Annual Green Out game scheduled The 5th Annual Green Out Game will be held on January 30, 2015. T-shirt order forms can be found in the HS/MS Office. "When the op- portunity came across, I jumped at it." "I wasn't sure what I wanted to do with my life and what I wanted to do after high school," said Drew Sides, also a senior now at Lone Tree. ' lot of my family has been in the army Gabe Coppinger and Drew Sides are focused on their future in a way that most high school seniors aren't. During a National Guard re- cruiting event, both Gabe and Drew decided getting into the army a little early was what they wanted to do. "I've always had a lot of re- and it's always something I've wanted to do, playing with toy soldiers, I thought it would be cool to get the training and keep going with it." The pair was attracted to the Iowa National Guard recruiter who came to Lone Tree with some inflatable Zorb balls to play with during a Physical Education period during their junior year of high school. 't the end of PE he sat down and talked about the benefits in The National Guard," said Gabe. "You're in part time, attending college, serving your commu- nity." Coppinger and Sides both de- cided to join the Army and at- tend the first part of their basic training during the summer between their junior and senior year of high school. It was a sacrifice for Cop- pinger who had been on the L-T baseball team until then, and for Sides who said he missed his girlfriend- and family, a lot. "Being away from the high school aspect was tough," said Gabe. 'nd not being able to do baseball. Because they made it to State while I was gone." Coppinger said he got a let- ter that told about the team qualifying for State, but before he'd gotten the letter, they'd al- ready played their game in Des Moines. "Basic training was one of the hardest things I've done in my entire life," said Drew. "Physi- cally it was demanding and mentally as well. Lions wrestle at BGM by Tim Groff The Lone Tree Reporter The Lone Tree boys got a first place finish from Alex Yedlik and a second place finish from Levi Tripses at the Corky Stewart In- vitational at BGM on Saturday, January 10. Aaron Slaughter and Thomas Tryon also earned fourth place finishes at the event for the Lions. At BGM, Alex Yedlik battled through five rounds of action and earned three pins, and a tech fall on his way to the championship round. There he faced Alex Warm of Jesup and worked a 8-7 decision for the first place finish at 1451bs. At 1261bs, Levi Tripses battled through the first four rounds of action, getting four pins on his way to the championship bout against Jacob Krakow of Iowa Valley. Krakow (26-3) got the win by fall in 1:50, leaving second place to Tripses. At 1061bs, Aaron Slaughter suf- fered three straight losses but wrestled back in the fourth and fifth round matches to earn wins over Mogan Rowley of Anamosa, a 10-9 decision, and a pin over Aus- tin McFall of Iowa Valley. At 1601bs, Thomas Tryon was 2-3, getting third and fourth round wins over Derick Wieremann of HLV and Sam Grinstead of Des Moines Roosevelt. The Lions will be in action again at the Waco Tournament on January 17 against teams from Regina, English Valley, HLV, West Burlington, Tri:County, Davis 0€ o and Mid-Praie. The/'II have a dual wit New London:and L-M on January 22, and will wrestle at the Midland Tournament on January 24. City Council L-T boys outlast Panthers, fall to IMS Agenda by Tim Groff The Lone Tree Reporter The Lone Tree boys had a pair of tough back-to-back games, bat- tling the Pekin Panthers on Janu- ary 9, to a 50-47 win, and tussling with a tough IMS squad that dealt them their second loss of the sea- son, 67-61, on Saturday evening, January 10. The snow postponed Lone Tree's opening game of 2015, scheduled at home against IMS on January 6, so the game was rescheduled for Saturday evening. Lone Tree vs. Pekin The L-T boys battled Pekin on January 9, getting the 50-47 win, despite netting just three points in the slow-moving fourth quarter. L-T was broiled in a close game in the first and second quarterS, down 14-10 after one and 31-30 at halftime. On January 23, 24, and 25, Mus- catine Arts Council will host the 21st annual Eagles and Ivories Ragtime Festival. This will be a weekend of world-class ragtime and stride, Dixieland jazz, boogie- woogie, spirituals, traditional jazz, and much more. Each eve- ning concert is $15, afternoon con- certs are $10, and Saturday Silent Movie is $5. A three-day concert package is $40. Children under 16 are free. Tickets are available at Flowers on the Avenue and at the door. Free events include, Friday 9 am Kick-off concert at Sunny Brook and Saturday 9 am Eagle Watch at Pearl City Station. Continued... on page 3 by Tim Groff The Lone Tree Reporter The Lone Tree girls battled Pekin on Friday evening, January 9, and then hosted IMS on Satur- day afternoon, getting beat by the Panthers, 58-31, but getting their third win of the season against IMS, 39-27. The Lady Lions are scheduled to play at Columbus Junction on Tuesday evening, January 13 (after Lone Tree Reporter publish- ing deadlines) and will be at home against Mediapolis on Friday, Jan- uary 16, - weather permitting. Lone Tree vs. Pekin The L-T girls opened the 2015 haft of their season with a loss at Pekin on January 9, falling be- hind in a tough 26-3 second-quar- ter that made it a lopsided final. The Lady Lions led 14-11 after the first quarter, but Pekin swarmed for 26 points in the sec- ond quarter and led big at haft- time, 37-13. Lone Tree kept pace in the second haft, but couldn't mount a comeback - failing 58-31. Madison Forbes led her team of- fensively with 13 points. She also had four steals for her team on defense.
