Coppinger and Sides choose the
National Guard for their education
by Tim Groff
The Lone Tree Reporter
spect for veterans and those
who've served over seas, I've
grown up looking up to those in
uniform," said Gabe Coppinger,
now a senior at Lone Tree Com-
munity School. "When the op-
portunity came across, I jumped
at it."
"I wasn't sure what I wanted
to do with my life and what I
wanted to do after high school,"
said Drew Sides, also a senior
now at Lone Tree. ' lot of my
family has been in the army
Gabe Coppinger and Drew
Sides are focused on their future
in a way that most high school
seniors aren't.
During a National Guard re-
cruiting event, both Gabe and
Drew decided getting into the
army a little early was what they
wanted to do.
"I've always had a lot of re-
and it's always something I've
wanted to do, playing with toy
soldiers, I thought it would be
cool to get the training and keep
going with it."
The pair was attracted to the
Iowa National Guard recruiter
who came to Lone Tree with
some inflatable Zorb balls to
play with during a Physical
Education period during their
junior year of high school.
't the end of PE he sat down
and talked about the benefits in
The National Guard," said Gabe.
"You're in part time, attending
college, serving your commu-
nity."
Coppinger and Sides both de-
cided to join the Army and at-
tend the first part of their basic
training during the summer
between their junior and senior
year of high school.
It was a sacrifice for Cop-
pinger who had been on the L-T
baseball team until then, and
for Sides who said he missed his
girlfriend- and family, a lot.
"Being away from the high
school aspect was tough," said
Gabe. 'nd not being able to do
baseball. Because they made it
to State while I was gone."
Coppinger said he got a let-
ter that told about the team
qualifying for State, but before
he'd gotten the letter, they'd al-
ready played their game in Des
Moines.
"Basic training was one of the
hardest things I've done in my
entire life," said Drew. "Physi-
cally it was demanding and
mentally as well. You had to be
away from your family, your girl
friend for two and a half months,
It was hard not talking to them,
worrying about what was going

by Tim Groff
The Lone Tree Reporter
The Lone Tree boys had a pair
of tough back-to-back games, bat-
tling the Pekin Panthers on Janu-
ary 9, to a 50-47 win, and tussling
with a tough IMS squad that dealt
them their second loss of the sea-
son, 67-61, on Saturday evening,
January 10.
The snow postponed Lone Tree's
opening game of 2015, scheduled
at home against IMS on January
6, so the game was rescheduled for
Saturday evening.
Lone Tree vs. Pekin
