Coach Tom Squires set for dmark 300th wi n i
Continued... from page I competitive basketball." again he's a great guy." off but in the end you ve got to
Squires and his team also attend Squires will achieve his 300th have players," said Squires. "I Don't rely on the company who gave you a potentially
had some pretty good talent and a camp at Cornell College where career win sometime soon (if he can't take credit for these 300 wins defective hip implant to advise you on your legal right;!
you know we've always had kids
who have worked hard. In terms
of a coaching highlight that was
definitely one of them - when we
finished fourth - not because we
had two big kids, but that group
in general was very hard working
and very coach-able."
Squires said that he and his
teams have always tried to play
up-tempo basketball.
"That's something we picked
.up from Coach Smeins, we al-
ways played up-tempo, we pressed
and ran and used the three-point
shot," said Squires. "We're going
to be a team that puts a lot of
pressure on you defensively and
played an up-tempo basketball
game."
"That's a style people like to
watch and kids like to play. We're
going to pressure you for 32 min-
utes and put a lot of pressure on
the basketball. We really haven't
changed much with that philoso-
phy."
Playing in the North Division of
the Southeast Iowa Super Confer-
ence isn't always easy for a school
as small as Lone Tree.
"The North Division has always
put out some of the best teams out
there," said Squires. "IMS and us
being two of the smallest schools
in the North Division and we've
put together some great teams."
Squires pointed out that con-
tinuity in coaching has helped
some area schools develop win-
ning programs.
"Spielbauerat at Wapello, Gin-
gerich at IMS - those guys have
been there for a long time and
when you get that the kids buy
into the philosophy," said Squires.
"That's kind of been the way this
division has been there have
never been the gimmies in this
Conference you've got to show up
and play."
Hard work and good coaching
can help prepare basketball play-
ers for good competition. Coach
Squires has taken his teams to
get a good look at some different
competition at camps for the past
10-15 years.
"We've gone to team camp at
Waldorf College," said Squires.
"I take both JV and Varsity teams
and they get fifteen to seventeen
games in four days and it's vry
they can sometimes be paired
with 4A teams like Linn-Mar.
"That's good because those
teams will expose you if you have
any type of weaknesses," said
Squires. "You see a lot of differ-
ent kinds of basketball in four
days and that prepares us pretty
well for the season."
Coach Squires and his wife
Susan have two children, Shaun-
dria and Jovante, and Squires said
he's had to make a lot of sacrifices
as the AD at a small school.
"You're expected to be the activ-
ity director and that includes the
plays and the concerts and the one
sacrifice you have to make is your
family," said Squires. "My wife
has been very understanding of
my career - that there are a lot of
nights that I'm not home and es-
pecially that we've had a couple of
kids that she's had to raise by her-
self during basketball seasons."
Both Shaundria and Jovante get
to spend a lot of time in the gym
too.
"They both spend a lot of time
in the gym and hopefully along
the way that will pay off for my
son," said Squires. "I don't know
what my daughter will choose in
the future but she'll definitely
have that chance too."
Support from his community
and his family has been impor-
tant, and Squires said the support
of assistant coaches has been in-
valuable.
"Tim Navara had a very im-
portant part of those 300 wins
because he was with me for 15-16
years," said Squires. "He called
all our defenses, he could run the
practice and take over- he's an in-
tegral part of those 300 wins and
he put in as much time as I did in
that."
Navara left the Lone Tree Com-
munity school a few years ago to
become the principal at the High-
land Community School. He said
his wife joked to him that it was
like he'd been married to Squires.
"Tom and I were married for
17 years and that's almost exactly
what it was," said Navara who
coached with Squires from 1991-
2007: "We got to know each other
and it was a great time. I'd love
to tirn baek the elock and dO.It
