Obituaries
Elmer Rummelhart
1930 - 2001
Elmer Clarence Rummelhart,
71 of Riverside, died Saturday,
December 29, 2001, at the Mercy
Hospital in Iowa City. Funeral
services for Elmer were 10:30
a.m. Tuesday, January 1, 2002, at
the St. Mary's Catholic Church
in Riverside. Father Richard
Adam officiated. Burial was in
the Mt. Olivet Cemetery in
Riverside. Following service at
the cemetery a luncheon fol-
lowed at the St. Mary's Catholic
Church in Riverside. A visitation
was held Monday, December 31,
2001 from 4:00 - 7:00 p.m. at the
Sorden-Lewis Funeral Home in
Riverside with a 7:00 p.m. Prayer
service. A memorial fund has
been established at the funeral
home.
Elmer was born August 7,
1930 to Clarence and Clara
Rummelhart. Elmer attended St.
Mary's School in Riverside,
Iowa.
He worked a variety of jobs
during his lifetime, with his most
recent full-time job being at the
University of Iowa Hospital and
Clinics. After retiring, Elmer
worked part-time delivering
flowers for the Riverside Flower
Trek.
Elmer served in the service
during the Korean Conflict. He
proudly served his country for
two years, from October 23,
1951 to October 22, 1953,
receiving an honorable dis-
charge.
On July 27, 1991, Elmer mar-
ried Sharon Lee Hansen. They
made their home near Hills,
Iowa, moving to Riverside in
June of 2001. Elmer and Sharon
celebrated their 10 year anniver-
sary by renewing their vows in
the summer of 2001. They were
married for 10 years, 5 months
and 2 days.
Elmer took delight in a variety
of activities. He liked to fish,
play cards (often being teased
about his "poker leg"). He could
play a mean tune on the harmon-
ica. He enjoyed spending time
with family and friends and was a
member of the Eagle's Club in
Iowa City. He was also a mem-
ber of the St. Mary's Catholic
Church in Riverside. Elmer liked
to watch TV and was a fan of
some British comedies,
Everybody Loves Raymond and
M*A*S*H*. •
Elmer is survived by his lov-
ing wife, Sharon, his beloved
dog, Trixie, cat, Isabelle and
Oscar the fish. He is also sur-
vived by his sister, Elaine Brown
of Garland, Texas; sister,
Gertrude Landry and husband,
William of Cynthiana, Kentucky;
sister Ester Spevacek and hus-
band, Donald of Iowa City;
brother, Paul (Ted) and wife,
Judy of Iowa City; brother,
Hubert and wife, Leona of Iowa
City; brother, Richard and wife,
Lenore of Des Moines and sister,
Joanne Horesowsky and hus-
band, Richard of Richmond. He
is also survived by sister-in-law,
Donna Hansen of Carroll, Iowa;
sister-in-law, Karen Miller of
Tama, Iowa; sister-in-law, Mary
Walkup and husband, Michael of
Winterset, Iowa, sister-in-law,
Jeanne Hansen of Carroll, Iowa;
and sister-in-law, Janice
Hamilton and husband, Harlan of
Carroll, Iowa. He will be missed
by dozens of nieces and
nephews.
He was preceded in death by
his first wife, Rose Tappen, his
parents, Clarence and Clara
Rummelhart, brother, Lester
Rummelhart, parents-in-law
Herman and Madge Hansen, and
brother-in-law, Ronald Hansen.
Elmer was a one-of-a-kind
guy. He was friendly and easily
liked. He well be missed by
many, many people, most espe-
cially his wife and his good pal,
Trixie.
Oleo 1". Schomberg
1915 - 2001
Cleo T. Schomberg, 86 of Lone
Tree, died Monday, December 10,
2001, at the Mercy Hospital in
Iowa City following a short ill-
ness.
Funeral services for Cleo were
10:00 a.m. Thursday, December
13th, 2001, at the Church of St.
Mary in Lone Tree. Father
Richard Adam and Parish Life
Coordinator Carol Kaalberg
presided. Burial was in the Lone
Tree Cemetery. Following the
committal Service at the cemetery
a luncheon was held at the Lone
Tree American Legion. A visita-
tion was held Wednesday,
December 12th, 2001, from 4:00
-7:00 p.m. at the Sorden-Lewis
Funeral Home in Lone Tree with a
Christian wake service at 7:00
p.m. Memorials may be directed
to the Lone Tree Fire and Rescue.
Cleo was born June 3rd, 1915
in rural Lone Tree the son of
Henry H. and Mary (Halligan)
Schomberg.
On May 24th, 1945, Cleo was
united in marriage to Dorothy M.
Kelly in Kinross, Iowa.
Cleo farmed his entire life in
the Lone Tree area. He was a very
active member of the Church of
St. Mary in Lone Tree. Cleo
enjoyed the outdoors, watching
birds and mornings with his
friends having a cup of coffee.
But most of all, Cleo dearly loved
to spend time with his family,
Cleo will be deeply missed by
his wife, Dorothy of Lone Tree;
three daughters, Susan Anderson
and her husband, Glen of
Bettendorf, Christa Nollenberger
and her husband, Karl of
Libertyviile, Illinois and Nancy
Phillips and her husband, Bill of
Coralviile; four sons, John
Schomberg and his wife, Linda of
Muscatine, Patrick Schomberg
and his wife, Jennifer of Ft.
Dodge, Iowa, Donald Schomberg
and his wife, Lisa of Riverside
and Paul Schomberg and his wife,
Cheryl of Dubuque; sixteen
grandchildren and six great grand-
children.
Cleo was preceded in death by
his parents, two gi'andsons, one
sister and two brothers.
George W. Eden
1930 - 2001
George W. Eden,71,died on
Dec.ember 23, 2001 at his home,
1298 Blandford Street, Staunton,
VA. He was born February 27,
1930 at Lone Tree, IA to Howard
M. and Frata Morrison Eden. He
married Dorothy Whitlock at
Arlington, VA on November
24,1951.
He was a resident of Bonaparte
for seven years before graduation
from Bonaparte High School in
1947. He was employed by the
Santa Fe Railroad as a corman
apprentice after graduation. He
enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1948,
where after completing basic
training and High Speed Radio
Operators school was assigned to
.the 53rd Signal Service Company
and graduated from the Defense
Language Institute as Sgt. 1st
class. With completion of more
than five years of military service
he was hired by Government
Communications for tours of duty
in Southhampton, England and
Bremerhaven Germany. He grad-
uated from the University of
Maryland with a B.A. in Political
Science. He retired in 1985 after
32 years of government employ-
ment.
George enjoyed sports, hunting
and traveling.
Survivors include his wife; two
children Stuart, Manassas, VA and
Sharon Eden, Catawba, VA; two
grandchildren; one brother, Fred,
Bonaparte, IA; four sisters, Helen
Latta, Iowa City, IA; Gertrude
Swanson, Lone Tree,IA; Mildred
Wilson, Bonaparte, IA and Ruth
Dilger, Pasadena, CA.
Preceding him in death were
his parents, one brother, Ralph
and a sister, Vera Hemmings.
Mr. Eden was cremated and a
private memorial service was
held.
Marie J. Stebral
1912 - 2002
Marie J. Stebral, 89, formerly of
Capitol House Apartments in Iowa
City, died Saturday, January 5
2002 at the Lone Tree Care Center
after a lingering illness.
Mass of Christian Burial was
held Tuesday at 10:00 am at St.
Patrick Catholic Church with
Reverend James Vrba officiating.
Friends called Monday from
4:00 to 7:00 pm at Lensing Funeral
& Cremation. Service in Iowa City.
A rosary was recited at 7:00 pm.
Burial was in St, Joseph
Cemetery in Iowa City. Memorials
may be directed to the Marie
Stebral Memorial Fund.
Marie was born August 31,
1912 in Cosgrove, Iowa, the daugh-
ter of Thomas & Nellie King
Donahue, She attended schools in
the Cosgrove area. She was united
in marriage to Frank Stebral June
26, 1935 at St. Mary's Catholic
Church in Iowa City. Marie was a
homemaker ' and also worked as a
housekeeper at the Congress Inn
and at the Phi Kappa Psi fraternity
at the University of Iowa. The cou-
ple farmed in the Newport area
until moving to Iowa City in 1980.
She was a member of St. Patrick
Catholic Church.
Survivors include: one daugh-
ter: Margaret Goering & her hus-
band Richard of Iowa City; three
sons: Jim Strebral & his wife
Virginia of Solon, Bill Stebral &
his wife Judy of Lone Tree, Paul
Stebral & his wife Mary Jean of
Newport; two brothers: Leo
Donahue of Cedar Rapids, Father
Paul Donahue of Davenport;eight
grandsons; nine great-grandchil-
dren; several nieces, nephews, and
grand nieces & nephews.
Marie was preceded in death by
her parents, her husband Frank in
1984, an infant sister Cecilia, one
sister Margaret Kabela and one
brother Frank Donahue.
